Being Kevin Mchale

I think a lot of times we, as fans, get caught up in making deals that seem great in fantasy basketball. You know, where you look at your team like they're just made up of statistical categories. Some NBA owners seem to run their teams like this (see Cuban, Mark), but for the most part the championship teams are ones that have grown together. In our case, we had our overhaul last year (that thankfully meshed much better/faster than is usually the case), and we've now got the foundation layed for a championship squad. We could always get better, but I don't think a fantasy type blockbuster is good for us if it disrupts that foundation.

Love them or hate them, I think Spree and Cassell definitely belong in that foundation with KG. They may be older than ideal, they may at times be streaky (at least Spree), but I think their intangibles, their playoff experience, their credability, and more importantly the synergy that the three of them created last year would make thoughts of moving any of them unpalatable (even if we'd be getting a player like Kidd back - like has been discussed).

Ideally, Wally would fit into that group too. I've never been the biggest fan of his, but having followed him for so many years on the squad I'd like to see him be a part of the success I think we'll reap. That said, he's the one talented player that we have that isn't crucial (KG/Sam/Spree) or recently signed (HHH), and has the best trade value. Now, I don't necessarily feel that we have to make a trade, but if we do find a good one I think Wally is the only logical person from our team to make that happen.

Being Kevin Mchale, though, the only way I'd move him is for someone that could be a crucial piece for us for years to come and not just in the short term. I'm not saying I wouldn't trade him for Shareef or Allen or any other great player in the last year of a deal (cuz I would), because at least we'd have a chance to re-sign them and they're young enough to be in the foundation after Sam and Spree slide out of it. But I am saying that deals built around Kurt Thomas or any other thirty-something role player should be strictly off limits, despite whether you think our team has that need or not.

Anyway, just a rant to sum up some of my thoughts from what I've seen posted in the time since HHH officially were resigned. If I'm Mchale I'm standing pat right now, looking at cheap big FAs right now to fill out the roster...unless someone makes an offer for World that sweeps me off my feet. Anyone else got thoughts/rants about their GM philosophy if they could be Mchale for the day?
