Camp going on road for four days
Quote:
The team announced Tuesday it will hold four days of workouts and a scrimmage at Capital University to start training camp next month. It is the first time the team has trained outside Gund Arena since 1997, when Mike Fratello took the team to Dayton.
The move is two-fold. Cavaliers coach Paul Silas has wanted to take his team off site since last season, when a plan to take training camp to the University of Toledo fell through. This year, with six new players, Silas wants to use the time away to build team chemistry.
From a business standpoint, the Cavaliers are eager to develop their Columbus fan base. Last season, the team saw its television ratings explode in Central Ohio, getting even higher ratings than the Columbus Blue Jackets. The team also sold more than 10,000 tickets to groups from Columbus.
This season, the Cavaliers have picked up television and radio partners that will put all 82 regular-season games on TV and over the air.
"Columbus has become a major market,'' Cavaliers/Gund Arena president Len Komoroski said. "We're the flag bearer for the NBA in Ohio.''
The Cavaliers will practice at the Capital Center from Oct. 5-9. On Oct. 8, they will hold a scrimmage at the 3,000-seat arena. Tickets will be available through a promotion offered by Columbus-area Giant Eagle stores.
"Last year I felt like we had three different teams. I want to be one team from Day One,'' Silas said. "This will give us a chance to bond and get to know each other.''
