Re: NFL Draft
Potential busts:
Alex Smith: He doesn't have a great arm and the offense he was apart of was very unorthodox, it was not a professional offense at all. What might bail Smith out is his athletic ability and escape ability as a QB. He could be a very good player, or he could turn out to be nothing special.
Kyle Orton: I don't know if any teams are high on him, but if they are they shouldn't be. He has a average arm at best, he is a sub par athlete and does not have that fire in the belly you want from a QB. His leadership qualities are a big question to me.
Cedric Benson: The kid could either be a very solid RB or he could be below average. He does not do anything amazing, he has been a consistent RB for 4 straight years at Texas but that doesn't mean he is a great RB. He is not very fast and he is not very quick as a runner. I like his versitility out of the backfield, but his lack of great athletic ability could hurt him at the next level.
Anthony Davis: He is a very skinny and thin RB. He is not very strong and he has a history of getting injured during the season. He has good speed but he does not break tackles that well and tends to shy away from contact. If he is picked high in the draft, that could be a mistake.
Braylon Edwards: The only thing that scares me about Edwards is that David Terrell was a great college WR just like Edwards, so maybe its the system at Michigan and not the WR. Another question mark for him is the fact he is not a great athlete, and he has attitude issues, he has made great progess in that area this year but why did it take him so long to make that progress? Did he have to get the #1 on his jersey to be a great Michigan WR?
Fred Gibson: It happened a long time ago, but the fact that he sold his championship ring on ebay raises hug flags in my mind about his character. He is a good athlete, tall kid and can run but he ridicilously underachieves on the football field. He had the potential to be a great WR, but I don't think he has the work ethic or character to be a great WR.
Travis Johnson: He could either be really good or really bad. The ironic thing about him is that I honestly did not notice him that much in college, he put up good statistics but during the game you never really noticed him. It also could be that the entire FSU defensive line underachieved, who knows, but I think Johnson is a questionable player, could be good but also could be bad.
Dan Cody: He is not a very physical player at all, he is a speed rusher totally and does not stop the run at all. He lacks strength but he makes up for it in quickness. There is also a tendency for OU players to be overrated, example being Everage, Calmus etc.
Marcus Spears: He has the potential to be a great player, but for some reason it doesn't seem likely he will do that. He seems to disappear in games, and he is a cross between a DT and a DE. It also doesn't help he had a average year, it he was more dominant his stock would be much higher. Regardless he is still a 1st round pick most likely for a 4/3 defensive team.
Justin Miller: He is a very good CB and will be a 1st round pick without question, but I think he lacks in true quickness, agility and toughness. He is not a great tackler and he does not make a lot of plays on the ball as he should. He has great speed, is a wonderful return man in college but his true CB skills are some what questionable.
Fabian Washington: I have mentioned him three times in this thread. If he never ran that great 40 at the combine he would not be talked about this much, but since he did he will probably be a 2nd or 3rd round pick just on his time in the 40. He was a solid CB for Nebraska but if he was as good as some people are saying, the Nebraska defense would have been a lot better than it was and he would have made a lot more plays on the field.
Antonio Perkins: I think he is very overrated as a CB, he is a return man that could maybe be a nickle back some day. I do not like CB skills and I think the only reason he will be drafted high is on his return ability not his ability at CB. He could be a good selection but don't expect him to be a all world CB.
Jim Leonhard: He is a great athlete for his size and had a wonderful college career, but he is to short to be a good safety in the NFL. Bob Sanders is a great safety because he can tackle, regardless of the fact he is short, Leonhard on the other hand is not a great tackler. He makes good plays on the ball, so I would imagine he might move to nickle back. He is a solid punt returner and that will help his stock as well, but as a true FS goes, I don't think he will be that effective.
Ernest Shazor: He could be a huge bust, some people are really high on him but I am not. He is a great hitter, makes big plays and physically he is strong and has a perfect frame. But the problem is the fact that he is slow and a poor coverage player. He gets out ran a lot in the defensive backfield and that is a problem. He might make up for his lack of speed with intelligence on the field and being in the right place at the right time, but if he doesn't he will struggle in the league.
Jamaal Brimmer: Brimmer's only problem is the fact he is not a very good athlete at all. At times he makes great plays on the field and other times he disappears. He has the potential to be a big play SS or FS but he will have to improve his work ethic and technique as a football player. I also hope he starts to play the game with more aggression and becomes a more assertive hitter as a safety.
