That's what I figure as well. Why would an agent recommend that he stay in the draft if there are buyout issues? If he gets drafted this year, he will get rookie money based on this year's rookie salary scale. If he goes at #15, he winds up with about $1.3 million in his rookie year. If he waits a year or two and winds up in the top 5, he would double or triple that number.
He's only 20. Even if he waits two years when all contract issues are resolved, he would be the age of a college senior.
Last year, I thought Monia's agent screwed him up. Monia's contract purportedly permitted a buyout if and only if he was picked in the lottery. They thought he would get the lottery pick so took the chance. Instead, he wound up at #23 with no buyout; going back to CSKA Moscow where he got less playing time [why waste time on a player you know is leaving]; and a lot less money when he finally signs with an NBA team.
