Its All about the Money After All

Yeah, that column I wrote for yesterday's paper?

Let's just forget about it, shall we?

Scott Skiles and his agent duped me. That or Jerry Reinsdorf, a day later, duped Skiles.

Either way, I feel like a real dupa.

It's always about the money. Always. Always. Always.

I feel like somebody should be rapping me on the head yelling, "Hello, McFly!"

Because the day before yesterday, I sat in this very same chair, in this very same messy home office, occasionally glancing up at that very same framed concert photo of Stevie Ray Vaughan, typing these words: "Skiles ... has always operated with a consistent set of principles."

Meanwhile, Skiles was telling the Chicago Tribune, "I've got a pretty small but deep set of principles about how I conduct business. ... The way this has been conducted is so far from the principles of how I do business."

And then, there Skiles stood yesterday, telling a group of reporters assembled at the NBA's predraft camp downtown, "When we say it's not about the money, what we mean is it's not solely about the money."

No wonder this is a guy who cringed at the sight of one Tuesday headline, "Divorce Court," noting, "that's been a sore subject in my past anyway ... "

Yeah, honey, when I say it's 'til death do us part, what I mean is it's not solely death ...

Actually, that's not fair. I have no idea how it is divorce court came to be a sore subject with Skiles. Just as, I must remind myself, I have no idea what went on inside Skiles' negotiations with the Bulls.
