Iverson Aiding Hurricane Victims; Ready for Season to Start

Quote:
Allen Iverson flew into to Philadelphia on Wednesday afternoon from Houston and headed straight for the Wachovia Center.

No, Iverson was not heading to a game or practice.

He was there to tape a public service announcement with Flyers captain Keith Primeau for the American Red Cross.

Iverson had been in Houston to support TNT basketball analyst and former NBA player Kenny Smith’s ”NBA Players Hurricane Relief Game,” to help aid the victims of Hurricane Katrina. The game was held Sunday, Sept. 11th at the Toyota Center.

“It was the best game I ever watched. Period. Because of the magnitude of it all, the cause," Iverson said. "It was just great. I love Kenny Smith for what he did. A lot of people could have tried to attempt to get that done, but he’s the one who did it.”

Iverson had not planned on playing in the contest because of some inflammation in his right elbow caused by lifting weights at his home. But he still wanted to be there to support the cause.

“I can’t imagine it,” Iverson said of the devastation in the Gulf Region. “My wife and family members watched the events every day on the news. It’s hard for me to watch it. They have to be stronger than me to watch that everyday. It’s hard for me to watch it.”

Personally, Iverson is helping out friends and family in the region who were affected by the storm and its aftermath.
Quote:
Iverson, who after a restful summer is feeling healthy, is chomping at the bit to get things going. There is just one thing the 10-year vet has on his mind – winning it all.

“I got the scoring titles, been at All-Star games, won the MVP award. All those things are great for me and make me feel good about myself as a player, but I just want to win it. I just want to do whatever it takes to win it. Whatever it takes.”

When he talked with Head Coach Maurice Cheeks over the summer, the former Sixers point guard asked the current Sixers point guard if he could do one thing:

“’He asked me if I could lead the league in assists?’ I told him, ‘yeah,’” Iverson proclaimed. “I want to win it. I just got to win it. That’s all I think about everyday of my life. Just trying to get that done.”

Memo to all the people in the grocery stores and places who run into Iverson telling him he needs help: Iverson is content with the players around him.

“I swear I feel like I’ve got the guys around me that I need,” Iverson said. “Those are the guys that can win it with me. I don’t think we need anybody else. Shaq would help. Kobe would help. Tracy would help. That’s impossible. With the guys that we got, we have the best chance in the world.”
It's great to see Allen Iverson having a productive off season and has full confidence in our team. The team only goes as far as Iverson takes us.
