CHARLESTON, S.C. - Nine days is the longest training camp Knicks coach Larry Brown can remember having with any of the nine pro teams he's coached.
The past three Knicks training camps run by former coaches Don Chaney and Lenny Wilkens were a veritable picnic compared with the relentless drills Brown put them through.
As a veteran of past camps under San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich, a Brown disciple, power forward Malik Rose was used to the work ethic. But nine days of banging left him shaking his head.
"We'll have to see the benefits later," Rose said. "I thank God nobody got hurt or seriously injured. I think we got better, too. It was very hard, very physically demanding, but maybe Coach meant to do that for a reason."
Point guard Stephon Marbury has to get used to playing without the ball more as Brown nudges him toward more of a shooting guard role, and shooting guard Jamal Crawford has to reel in his tendency to launch long shots and learn to handle the ball more and look for the open man under the basket. Both seemed to take Brown's demands in stride.
