Saunders' practice is rigorous after unusual two days off

Quote:
AUBURN HILLS-- Everything was back to normal at the Pistons practice facility Tuesday.

Players were sweat-soaked but smiling. The sound of bouncing basketballs echoed everywhere, punctuated by occasional yells, laughs or whistle blasts.

It was time to go back to work, after a rare two-day break of not practicing. The Pistons do not play again until Friday at Golden State, so coach Flip Saunders gave everybody a break.

Saunders made sure his team wouldn't get rusty, working it hard in the two-hour-plus practice.

"It was kind of what you want to do when you have a couple of days off," Saunders said. "You get back to some of the basics. You work on your defensive principles, kind of a shortened type of training camp. You work on the fundamentals a lot, and you tie in the last half of your practice to some game stuff."

Saunders didn't come up with any grandiose ideas during his time off. He went home to suburban Minneapolis to spend time with his family, along with sneaking a few peeks at NBA games on the satellite dish.

"You never unplug totally," Saunders said. "I didn't make any big changes (Tuesday). I kind of throw things in on a need-to basis. Give these guys some scrimmages, go that way with it.

"Right now it's not like we're going to put in two, three new plays because we've got the time off."
