I think coaches would give it to veterans who haven't been all-stars than to rookies. I don't think Michael Redd deserved to get in over LeBron during LeBron's rookie year but senority probably had a lot to do with it. You really have to be Tim Duncan or Shaq to make it your rookie year.

Damon Stoudamire and Steve Francis were also in the class of Magic Johnson and Isiah Thomas their rookie years too according to some people. People always omit things when it's convenient to the argument. Yes, Paul is doing great but you can't compare him to the greats just yet.
