The underpriviledged that he's helped in two cities all count as "family and friends?"

If you're telling me that a good person is never disrespectful to anyone, I disagree with you. With no context as to when he was "rude" (in your friend's eyes), I have no way to evaluate that. I do evaluate his being charitable with his time and money, and being a caring father as qualities of a good person.
