Patterson Eying Potential Trades (Quick)

From: The Big O

Let's make a deal.

That's the primary goal this week of Steve Patterson, the Trail Blazers president and acting general manager, as he heads a contingent of team personnel that will attend the NBA's predraft camp in Orlando, Fla.

Patterson said he will be looking for trade scenarios to improve a Blazers team that finished 21-61 last season, the NBA's worst record, and there is no better place, perhaps, to set the groundwork for a deal than at the predraft camp........

The Blazers will begin ushering in the top-tier prospects to Tualatin next week. On June 15, the Blazers will work out Washington guard Brandon Roy, Gonzaga forward Adam Morrison, Connecticut forward Rudy Gay and Villanova guard Randy Foye. Texas forward LaMarcus Aldridge is tentatively scheduled for June 14. . . .

Not expected to work out for the Blazers is Louisiana State guard/forward Tyrus Thomas, who has stated he will only work out for the teams with the top three picks (Toronto, Chicago and Charlotte). Patterson said that tactic could hurt Thomas. "Usually a workout is an important part of the evaluation for a high draft pick," Patterson wrote. "It can be an influencing factor, sometimes significantly so. It is also a risk for the player if he doesn't get drafted where he expects to. When that happens, there can be a free fall as was the case last year with Gerald Green or years ago with Nick Van Exel. There is often an agent that overplays his hand in every draft and costs his client dearly. There can also be promises that just don't work out to be so guaranteed."
