JuniorNoboa made a good point earlier this evening that is relevant to this thread.
Toronto's window to sign free agents is small. Likely limited to this summer only. From then on we will be spending our money to re-sign our restricted free agents.
Since it doesn't really affect our ability to sign free agents this summer, and won't affect our ability to re-sign our restricted free agents later (so long as MLSE is convinced we are moving forward and is willing to cash cheques to prove it), it's not so hard for us to take on his contract.
It also opens up our options this summer big-time. We can pick whoever we want rather than having to focus on one position (in free agency and the draft).
I dare say it makes re-signing James more likely, too. Won't complain about that!
