Players without Others, version 2

At the end of the 2004-2005 season, I did some work using 82games.com's Player Pairs stats in order to find out how players play without certain teammates. 82games.com can tell you, for example, how Wade performed with Shaq on the floor, but we should be able to use these same numbers to find out how Wade performed when Shaq wasn't on the floor. And that's what I did.

Well, I've started the same calculations again. As with last year, I'll post the first 4 sets I've looked at here, and then take suggestions/comments/ideas on what to do next.

For each set, I will post the player in question's total per40 minute numbers, his per40 numbers with that specific teammate, and his per 40 numbers without that specific teammate (in bold).

1) Wade's play due to Shaq
Wade's total per 40 minute numbers:
28.2 pts, 5.9 rbs, 6.9 asts, 0.8 blks, 2.0 stls, 49.5 fg%, 3.7 to's, 11.1 fta's
Wade's per 40 minute numbers with Shaq (from 82games.com):
25.6 pts, 4.9 rbs, 7.5 asts, 0.8 blks, 1.9 stls, 54.4 fg%, 3.9 to's, 9.2 fta's
Wade's per 40 minute numbers without Shaq--1425 minutes (my work):
30.7 pts, 6.9 rbs, 6.3 asts, 0.8 blks, 2.1 stls, 46.0 fg%, 3.5 to's, 12.9 fta's

Nothing terribly surprising about this set: Wade's scoring and fta's go up without Shaq, as he handles the ball more, while his shooting efficiency takes a hit. What's nice is that he is able to keep his turnovers constant even without Shaq on the floor, as this was not the case last year.

2) Vince's play due to Kidd
Vince's total per 40 minute numbers:
26.3 pts, 6.4 rbs, 4.6 asts, 0.7 blks, 1.3 stls, 43.0 fg%, 2.9 to's, 8.3 fta's
Vince's per 40 minute numbers with Kidd (from 82games.com):
26.6 pts, 6.4 rbs, 4.5 asts, 0.6 blks, 1.3 stls, 43.5 fg%, 2.8 to's, 8.3 fta's
Vince's per 40 minute numbers without Kidd--439 minutes (my work):
24.6 pts, 6.4 rbs, 5.2 asts, 1.3 blks, 1.3 stls, 40.0 fg%, 3.5 to's, 8.3 fta's

As with last year, Vince's efficiency takes a hit when Kidd is off the floor. Unlike Wade, he doesn't seem to compensate for that loss by getting to the free-throw line more or by keeping his turnovers constant.

3) Odom's play due to Kobe
Odom's total per 40 minute numbers:
14.7 pts, 9.2 rbs, 5.5 asts, 0.8 blks, 0.9 stls, 48.1 fg%, 2.6 to's, 3.9 fta's
Odom's per 40 minute numbers with Kobe (from 82games.com):
13.8 pts, 9.0 rbs, 5.6 asts, 0.8 blks, 0.9 stls, 48.7 fg%, 2.5 to's, 3.7 fta's
Odom's per 40 minute numbers without Kobe--512 minutes (my work):
19.5 pts, 10.2 rbs, 5.0 asts, 0.8 blks, 0.9 stls, 45.9 fg%, 3.1 to's, 5.0 fta's

Unsurprisingly, Odom's scoring, turnovers, and fta's go up, while his fg% goes down.

4) Parker's play due to Duncan
Parker's total per 40 minute numbers:
22.2 pts, 3.8 rbs, 6.8 asts, 0.1 blks, 1.2 stls, 54.8 fg%, 3.7 to's, 5.3 fta's
Parkers per 40 minute numbers with Duncan (from 82games.com):
21.7 pts, 3.9 rbs, 6.4 asts, 0.1 blks, 1.2 stls, 56.4 fg%, 3.4 to's, 4.5 fta's
Parker's per 40 minute numbers without Duncan--577 minutes (my work):
24.1 pts, 3.4 rbs, 8.3 asts, 0.1 blks, 1.2 stls, 49.3 fg%, 4.8 to's, 8.3 fta's

This one is interesting: Parker's fg% comes down 5 points to more normal levels, and his turnovers shoot up without Duncan. However, he also gets to the free throw line a lot more, and seems to make a more consistent effort to make plays for teammates, as the increased assists indicate.

So with those 4 sets up, any thoughts? Are there any other players that you think it would be worthwhile to do this sort of investigation on?

EDIT:
==========REQUESTS======================
5) Dirk's play due to Terry
Dirk's total per 40 minute numbers:
27.9 pts, 9.4 rbs, 2.9 asts, 1.1 blks, 0.8 stls, 48.0 fg%, 2.0 to's, 7.8 fta's
Dirk's per 40 minute numbers with Terry (from 82games.com):
28.1 pts, 9.9 rbs, 3.1 asts, 1.0 blks, 0.8 stls, 48.4 fg%, 1.9 to's, 7.6 fta's
Dirk's per 40 minute numbers without Terry--710 minutes (my work):
27.2 pts, 7.7 rbs, 2.2 asts, 1.4 blks, 0.8 stls, 46.6 fg%, 2.3 to's, 8.5 fta's

Nothing out of the ordinary here--Dirk's fg% and turnovers get worse ever so slightly, but he gets to the line more to compensate. The slight rebounding drop seems strange, though that may simply be a fluke of sample size. It seems that Terry, not being a pass-first point, really has little effect on Dirk's offensive game (though perhaps providing more spacing).

6) Terry's play due to Dirk
Terry's total per 40 minute numbers:
19.6 pts, 2.3 rbs, 4.4 asts, 0.4 blks, 1.4 stls, 47.0 fg%, 1.9 to's, 3.0 fta's
Terry's per 40 minute numbers with Dirk (from 82games.com):
19.1 pts, 2.2 rbs, 4.5 asts, 0.4 blks, 1.4 stls, 46.1 fg%, 1.9 to's, 3.1 fta's
Terry's per 40 minute minute numbers without Dirk--424 minutes (my work):
22.4 pts, 2.9 rbs, 3.8 asts, 0.4 blks, 1.4 stls, 51.5 fg%, 1.9 to's, 2.4 fta's

Terry definitely takes on a greater offensive role with Dirk off the floor, but manages to stay efficient, keeping his shooting percentage up and his turnovers down. Perhaps a testament to the variety of offensive weapons Dallas posessed.

7) Villaneuva's play due to James
Villanueva's total per 40 minute numbers:
17.9 pts, 8.8 rbs, 1.5 asts, 1.0 blks, 1.0 stls, 46.3 fg%, 1.7 to's, 2.7 fta's
Villanueva's per 40 minute numbers with James (from 82games.com):
16.5 pts, 9.3 rbs, 1.4 asts, 0.8 blks, 0.9 stls, 45.8 fg%, 1.6 to's, 2.7 fta's
Villanueva's per 40 minute numbers without James--716 minutes (my work):
21.1 pts, 7.7 rbs, 1.7 asts, 1.5 blks, 1.2 stls, 47.2 fg%, 1.9 to's, 2.7 fta's

So was James holding Villanueva back? It seems Charlie can score higher volume with no loss in efficiency, if given enough shots.

8) Jamison's play due to Arenas
Jamison's total per 40 minute numbers:
20.5 pts, 9.3 rbs, 1.9 asts, 0.1 blks, 1.1 stls, 44.2 fg%, 1.7 to's, 3.6 fta's
Jamison's per 40 minute numbers with Arenas (from 82games.com):
20.9 pts, 9.5 rbs, 1.9 asts, 0.1 blks, 1.0 stls, 44.9 fg%, 1.6 to's, 3.7 fta's
Jamison's per 40 minute numbers without Arenas--363 minutes (my work):
17.3 pts, 7.7 rbs, 1.9 asts, 0.1 blks, 1.9 stls, 38.8 fg%, 2.5 to's, 2.8 fta's

Jamison appears to take a large hit to his efficiency without Arenas. The sample size is a little small for my liking, but the set doesn't appear to say anything earth-shattering.

9) Kidd's play due to Vince
Kidd's total per 40 minute numbers:
14.3 pts, 7.8 rbs, 9.1 asts, 0.4 blks, 2.0 stls, 40.3 fg%, 2.6 to's, 3.3 fta's
Kidd's per 40 minute numbers with Vince (from 82games.com):
13.9 pts, 7.5 rbs, 9.0 asts, 0.4 blks, 2.1 stls, 41.3 fg%, 2.3 to's, 3.2 fta's
Kidd's per 40 minute numbers without Vince--498 minutes (my work):
16.3 pts, 9.3 rbs, 9.6 asts, 0.4 blks, 1.5 stls, 36.8 fg%, 4.1 to's, 3.8 fta's

Kidd also takes an efficiency hit without Carter, and compensates with improved rebounding and slightly improved playmaking.

10) Jefferson's play due to Kidd
Jefferson's total per 40 minute numbers:
20.0 pts, 7.0 rbs, 3.9 asts, 0.2 blks, 0.8 stls, 49.3 fg%, 2.3 to's, 7.6 fta's
Jefferson's per 40 minute numbers with Kidd (from 82games.com):
20.6 pts, 7.0 rbs, 4.0 asts, 0.2 blks, 0.7 stls, 51.0 fg%, 2.2 to's, 7.7 fta's
Jefferson's per 40 minute numbers without Kidd--492 minutes (my work):
16.8 pts, 7.0 rbs, 3.4 asts, 0.2 blks, 1.3 stls, 39.6 fg%, 2.8 to's, 7.1 fta's

Jefferson depends a lot on Kidd: take a look at that huge drop in fg%.

11) Crawford's play due to Marbury
Crawford's total per 40 minute numbers:
17.7 pts, 3.9 rbs, 4.7 asts, 0.2 blks, 1.4 stls, 41.7 fg%, 2.7 to's, 5.6 fta's
Crawford's per 40 minute numbers with Marbury (from 82games.com):
18.9 pts, 3.6 rbs, 3.6 asts, 0.3 blks, 0.4 stls, 41.6 fg%, 2.4 to's, 5.9 fta's
Crawford's per 40 minute numbers without Marbury--1536 minutes (my work):
16.9 pts, 4.1 rbs, 5.4 asts, 0.1 blks, 1.7 stls, 41.8 fg%, 2.9 to's, 5.4 fta's

It seems Crawford is almost completely unaffected by Marbury's presence, either for good or for bad. Does that mean that Crawford is almost purely an isolation scorer who is not dependant on his PG? Or that Steph simply does an average job at setting the table for Crawford? Not having watched the Knicks very much, I'll withhold judgment.

12) Curry's play due to Marbury
Curry's total per 40 minute numbers:
21.0 pts, 9.3 rbs, 0.4 asts, 1.3 blks, 0.6 stls, 56.3 fg%, 3.8 to's, 10.4 fta's
Curry's per 40 minute numbers with Marbury (from 82games.com):
21.9 pts, 10.0 rbs, 0.5 asts, 1.3 blks, 0.6 stls, 55.9 fg%, 3.7 to's, 10.7 fta's
Curry's per 40 minute numbers without Marbury--775 minutes (my work):
19.7 pts, 8.3 rbs, 0.3 asts, 1.1 blks, 0.6 stls, 56.9 fg%, 3.9 to's, 10.0 fta's

Again, very little effect either way from Marbury on Curry's numbers.

13) Howard's play due to Dirk
Howard's total per 40 minute numbers:
19.3 pts, 7.7 rbs, 2.3 asts, 0.5 blks, 1.4 stls, 47.1 fg%, 1.6 to's, 5.6 fta's
Howard's per 40 minute numbers with Dirk (from 82games.com):
19.5 pts, 7.6 rbs, 2.4 asts, 0.5 blks, 1.5 stls, 47.3 fg%, 1.7 to's, 5.9 fta's
Howard's per 40 minute numbers without Dirk--309 minutes (my work):
18.3 pts, 8.2 rbs, 1.8 asts, 0.5 blks, 0.9 stls, 46.0 fg%, 1.1 to's, 4.0 fta's

It appears that Dirk's play has very little influence on Howard's; this could be due to the isolation sort of offense that the Mavs play.

14) Dirk's play due to Dampier
Dirk's total per 40 minute numbers:
27.9 pts, 9.4 rbs, 2.9 asts, 1.1 blks, 0.8 stls, 48.0 fg%, 2.0 to's, 7.8 fta's
Dirk's per 40 minute numbers with Dampier (from 82games.com):
27.5 pts, 9.8 rbs, 3.0 asts, 0.9 blks, 0.9 stls, 47.9 fg%, 2.3 to's, 7.0 fta's
Dirk's per 40 minute numbers without Dampier--1635 minutes (my work):
28.3 pts, 9.0 rbs, 2.8 asts, 1.3 blks, 0.7 stls, 48.5 fg%, 1.7 to's, 8.5 fta's

Dirk's scoring is unaffected by Dampier, but what's interesting is that his rebounding remains constant (perhaps even decreases slightly) with Dampier off the floor. Since Dampier is a much better per minute rebounder than Diop, Mbenga, or Van Horn, one would think Dirk would rebound more in his absence. Not the case.

15) David West's play due to Chris Paul:
West's total per 40 minute numbers:
20.0 pts, 8.7 rbs, 1.5 asts, 1.0 blks, 1.0 stls, 51.2 fg%, 1.7 to's, 3.7 fta's
West's per 40 minute numbers with Paul (from 82games.com):
20.3 pts, 8.6 rbs, 1.4 asts, 1.1 blks, 0.9 stls, 51.2 fg%, 1.7 to's, 3.5 fta's
West's per 40 minute numbers without Paul--454 minutes (my work):
18.6 pts, 9.2 rbs, 2.0 asts, 0.5 blks, 1.5 stls, 51.2 fg%, 1.7 to's, 4.6 fta's

West's dramatic improvement this year coincided with Paul's arrival--how much of it was due to Paul? Not much, apparently. West played almost exactly as well with and without Paul on the floor, showing that there was a real improvement from him and not just from his PG.

16) Bosh's play due to James
Bosh's total per 40 minute numbers:
22.9 pts, 9.4 rbs, 2.6 asts, 1.1 blks, 0.7 stls, 50.5 fg%, 2.3 to's, 8.5 fta's
Bosh's per 40 minute numbers with James (from 82games.com):
22.5 pts, 9.5 rbs, 2.8 asts, 1.1 blks, 0.8 stls, 50.8 fg%, 2.2 to's, 7.9 fta's
Bosh's per 40 minute numbers without James--575 minutes (my work):
24.4 pts, 9.0 rbs, 1.8 blks, 1.1 stls, 0.3 stls, 49.4 fg%, 2.7 to's, 10.8 fta's

Same deal here, really. No James means more fta's for Bosh and perhaps a slight dip in efficiency.

17) Ford's play due to Redd
Ford's total per 40 minute numbers:
13.8 pts, 4.9 rbs, 7.4 asts, 0.1 blks, 1.6 stls, 41.6 fg%, 3.4 to's, 3.9 fta's
Ford's per 40 minute numbers with Redd (from 82games.com):
13.7 pts, 4.9 rbs, 7.5 asts, 0.1 blks, 1.6 stls, 42.4 fg%, 3.4 to's, 3.9 fta's
Ford's per 40 minute numbers without Redd--455 minutes (my work):
14.3 pts, 4.9 rbs, 6.9 asts, 0.1 blks, 1.6 stls, 38.5 fg%, 3.4 to's, 3.9 fta's

An expected efficiency hit for TJ, to his already poor shooting percentage. No turnover increase, probably because Redd plays off the ball a lot anyway.

18) Marion's play due to Nash
Marion's total per 40 minute numbers:
21.7 pts, 11.7 rbs, 1.7 asts, 1.7 blks, 2.0 stls, 52.4 fg%, 1.5 to's, 3.7 fta's
Marion's per 40 minute numbers with Nash (from 82games.com):
21.9 pts, 11.4 rbs, 1.8 asts, 1.5 blks, 2.1 stls, 51.4 fg%, 1.5 to's, 3.6 fta's
Marion's per 40 minute numbers without Nash--688 minutes (my work):
20.9 pts, 12.8 rbs, 1.3 asts, 2.5 blks, 1.6 stls, 56.8 fg%, 1.5 to's, 4.1 fta's

Now this one is kind of interesting, I think. In 04-05, I recall Marion being significantly worse with Nash off the floor: there was a dip in both scoring and fg%. This year there was no such dip. Could it be the effect of having an extra playmaker this year in Diaw?
