Interview with Rudy Gay
By: Graham Kendrick
With less than six weeks to go until his first NBA training camp, Rudy Gay is working out feverishly to get ready. He took time out of one his recent workouts to speak with grizzlies.com on Thursday, August 24, 2006. Here is a transcript of the interview:
Less than six weeks remain until the Grizzlies open training camp. What are you doing to get ready?
“Before it was basically just running, and staying in condition and staying in shape, but lately I’ve been shooting and doing stuff with Mike (Miller), so basically I’m going to keep doing those kinds of things and hopefully I’ll be ready by the time camp starts.”
What does Mike put you through?
“We’ve been doing a lot of conditioning and shooting, a little bit of ball-handling, getting ready, just setting up your shot.”
You played 33 games at UConn last season, but now have to be prepared to play 82. Are you worried about the transition?
“Of course, but all you can do is try to be prepared for it, and I’m going to do my best.”
Another transition is the longer three-point shot- will that be a difficult change for you?
“It’s definitely going to be an adjustment, but that’s what you work out for in the summer. That’s why I was training even before (pre-draft) workouts also.”
There’s been a lot of speculation whether you can begin the season as a starter. What are your expectations in that regard?
“I’m just working hard. I hope to (start), but nothing is given to you, you have to work for everything you do in this league.”
You’ll be seeing a lot of time on the court with Pau Gasol. How do you think your game will complement his?
“He’s an athletic big man, seven feet, and can do a lot of things on the court. I think I complement his style. You can’t double-team him out on the court, because we have other guys who will hurt you. Same with Eddie (Jones) and Mike (Miller), so it’ll be good playing with him in that aspect.”
