He's not redundant, and this just shows how little you know about the NBA.
Ben Wallace = No offense. He has trouble finishing the easy stuff.
Aaron Gray = Post up player. Rookie, not quite ready for the in and out of the NBA night in night out. Spot minutes.
Joakim Noah = Inside players. Just really a finisher at this point. Dunks and easy lay ins.
Andres Nocioni = Small forward, who is out there as a four. Used to stretch the defense out. With Nocioni out there, someone usually gets open (usually Nocioni) because the low post player doesn't go out to the three point line to defend him. Three point shooter.
Tyrus Thomas = Finisher last year. This year it looks like he will be able to shoot a midrange jumpshot with some consistency, as well as penetrate after receiving the ball about 18-20 feet out. Has a baby hook out of a spin move.
So where is Joe Smith redundant on the Bulls? A big with a midrange jumpshot is a logical need for the team.
