JS: Local boy makes good
Nice story on Devin Harris:
Quote:
So what drives the former Wauwatosa East and University of Wisconsin star?
"It's good security for my family, and I'm very grateful," Harris said of his new contract. "But our focus is to win a championship. It's good to know, and I appreciate it that I'm staying in Dallas for the next five years. But we definitely have expectations to fulfill."
Harris was in home territory Saturday night, playing in front of a large contingent of friends and family at the Bradley Center as the Mavericks met the Milwaukee Bucks.
And it was a more confident Harris on display, one named a team captain by his Dallas teammates and handed more responsibility by his coach, former NBA point guard Avery Johnson.
"You're not given anything in this league," Johnson said. "This league is all about earning respect or earning playing time. He's earned it. He's diligent about his study, about working before and after practice.
"He really knows the offense. It's like a quarterback in football. You get that chemistry; you get an understanding with what the coach wants. He's making my job a little easier this year."
Harris helped the Mavericks reel off five straight victories, until they were stopped by the Indiana Pacers, 111-107, on Friday night in Indianapolis. He scored 24 points against the Pacers after posting 22 in a comeback victory over Houston on Wednesday night
