McHale was a better overall player than Karl Malone in my opinion. Yes, Malone had the gaudy numbers, but I think numbers are overrated.
McHale had far superior post moves. He is one of the best post players ever, if not the best. The only guys that come close are Duncan, Kareem, and Hakeem (in my opinion, Shaq and Wilt can't be included because they relied so much on brute force).
