Thumbs up Knoxville College has plans to reinstate athletics

Basketball first
possibly soccer and track

Knoxville College is banking on veteran Knoxville athletics official Raleigh Wynn to get the Bulldogs back on the basketball court.

And if Wynn has his way, Knoxville College will have teams in soccer and track. There are no plans to reinstate football.

"Knoxville College will reinstate athletics this year," Wynn said Thursday.

"Things have been OK'd by Dr. Robert Harvey and Dr. Johnny Cannon, who are interim leaders of KC," said Wynn, the former athletic director at Austin-East High School and football and basketball official in high school and the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Wynn, who said he accepted the job of athletic director at the beckoning of Harvey and Cannon, hopes to have a kickoff fundraiser for the athletic program shortly after the end of Knoxville College's spring break, which is March 22.

Once Wynn gets a gauge on the finances available he will hire coaches for men's and women's basketball, he said. Uniforms from the Bulldogs' last basketball team "are in storage and like new."

"We expect to play in NCAA Division II and Division III," Wynn said. "In fact, I have already scheduled games with two schools in November. One is Virginia State."

He said the reason soccer is in the plans is that "a good part of our enrollment are international students."

He also cited that expenses for soccer and track likely will be affordable.

Wynn said coaches wishing to schedule with KC may reach him at 865-524-6580 or 936-1267, or by writing to him at 901 Knoxville College Dr., Knoxville, 37921.

Wynn played football and basketball at Tennessee State University and lettered in track. He is a member of Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame.
