Re: NBA Yearly Match-Up Tournament: 3/6 LaRue Martin Bracket
The Karl Malone I saw play from 1999-2000 through 2002-03 was in decline (especially considering he retired after 2003-04); 1999-2000 was his last year at a superstar level.
Kevin Garnett was behind Chris Webber in 2000-01 and 2001-02; it's fair to say KG caught up with C-Webb in 2002-03, but prior to that KG was all those negative things you said about Webber plus he wasn't quite as dominant offensively.
Dirk Nowitzki wasn't as good offensively as Webber during that period, plus he was a poor defender (much worse than what you accuse Webber). Elton Brand was raw and still developing, etc. C'mon, Antawn Jamison? Shawn Marion wasn't considered a power forward then.
It's pretty apparent where this argument is going -- Haterade city (for all I know, that could be backlash from C-Webb's days in Washington). If I recall correctly, Webber, Duncan and Garnett were all annual MVP candidates during that time, and Webber and Garnett alternated in placing in the voting. So this idea of players like Marion, Jamision and Brand being considered as good as Webber during that period sounds like revised history.
I mean, I know Webber isn't like Gilbert Arenas -- a trash-talking guard who can't deliver on his promises a lot of time and whose biggest goal is to get to the second round of the playoffs. Seriously, call me when Arenas actually plays for something besides a free-agent contract.
