Camby brings instant rebounding adn defense, and he'll retire in maybe 2-3 years, bringing flexibility right when your rebuilding will be at a critical point to add a proven vet to get you to "that next level."
With Melo, you also have a marketability that nobody on your team has been able to bring to date. Pau's great, but he's not marketable. Who would rush out to buy the new Pau Gasol basketball kicks?
See my point? With Melo there, you'll also attract some FA's to come your way in the near future. It could really help your team.
