I am plenty old enough to remember Harold Miner. Media driven bullcrap, non-substantive hype is not the same as a groundswell of scout/gm consensus regarding the quality level of a prospect.
Oden as a draft prospect was widely regarded by those who would/should know as a once every 5 to 10 year pivot, the uncontested #1 pick regardless of who might declare. Howard/Duncan/Shaq level prospect.
He could fail. He could be a bust. But, if he does it will be because he is injured in some way. If healthy, there is almost no chance whatsoever he wouldn't be an impactful player. That you think otherwise is strange to me. Like you are trying to tell me grass is pink.

Well the media also reported that those same GM's you speak of were also concerned with the durability of Oden's body and that he could have already been "damaged goods". Of course these reports didnt come out until after the draft. It works both ways.
