Magic Got Jobbed
Quote:
The Magic got jobbed in Monday night's playoff game at Detroit.
That isn't to say they would have won the game if Chauncey Billups' late 3-pointer had been disallowed at the end of the third quarter. Nor would it be fair to say that it didn't matter because Detroit's final margin of victory (seven points) was greater than the three illegitimate points the Pistons gained on that shot.
In case you missed it, the Pistons were down by one point with 5.1 seconds left in the third quarter. They had to take the ball out of bounds under the Magic's basket. There was some dribbling and a couple of passes. Rookie Rodney Stuckey got the ball in shooting range, but decided he couldn't get off a clean shot and dished off to Billups, who tossed up a desperation shot that went in.
But lo and behold, the clock was "stuck" on 4.8 seconds, even after the shot. So the officials basically had no clock; they had to confer and estimate how much time the whole sequence had taken. After a long discussion, they decided to allow the basket and, perhaps as a concession to the Magic, leave 0.5 seconds on the clock.
Well, OK, not their fault, although I still think Steve Javie is a terrible official. They had to make a guess; there is no provision in the NBA rules that would allow them access to a video review. It wasn't the fault of the officials that the clock, or the clock keeper, had screwed up.
