Was the lack of play-calling ability really that evident?

I think it's the expectations as a fifth pick that killed Devin in Dallas. He was asked to be more than he might ever become because the Mavs were in need for a true floor general after the loss of Kidd. Plus Avery as a former point guard trusts himself the most by a landslide, it's not easy for a young point guard to handle the situation. Having said all that it was definitely a mistake to make the trade and I was never fan of it. Despite all of his flaws he still was a contributor on a 67-win team and improved throughout the years.
