The invasion of Georgia is not Russia's fault. The Georgian president, an American ally, gets most of the blame.

Georgia hoped for a quick blitzkreig while the world's attention was fixed on the Beijing Olympics. Despite agreeing to an earlier ceasefire, at 3 am the Georgian military launched a massive, indiscriminate artillery and rocket barrage against the city of Tskhinvalli and then sent in their assault forces backed by heavy armor. The result was mass carnage and 1000 dead, mostly civilians.

The Russian response was measured. Compare it to Bush's response to 9/11 in which fewer than 3000 dead resulted in the occupations of 2 nations, causing a million deaths and 4 million refugees.
