State of the Golden State Warriors

Quote:
Last season the Golden State Warriors were just one of those teams that, when it was all said and done, looked like a mess. With uncertainties surrounding the organization's general manager and a coach known for putting players into his doghouse, as well as a recently-extended rising star like Monta Ellis blowing half the season because of an odd off-court injury, the Warriors just didn't have things easy in 2008-09.

At this point, it's difficult to say if 2009-10 will be an easier, but based on the moves made by newly-permanent GM Larry Riley and the summer league play of some of Golden State's youngsters, nobody would be surprised to see this squad do a little more winning this upcoming season.

Many of the hopes for this squad are pinned on the burgeoning backcourt relationship between Ellis and highly-touted rookie Stephen Curry, who led the NCAA in scoring last season. With guys like Stephen Jackson and Corey Maggette requiring a good deal of minutes as well, Curry might not get a ton of minutes in his first campaign, but it's no secret that much of the franchise's future relies on him.

In Summer League Curry looked so-so, scoring over 17ppg in five contests, but shooting an awful percentage (32.5%) from the field. Because he handles the ball so much, getting shots isn't going to be an issue. The real trick for Curry is going to be shot selection because if he's going to play any real time at point guard, there are plenty of other scorers on that roster that need the ball. So far Curry hasn't shown much aptitude in getting anyone else involved. He's going to have his really hot nights, and there are few rookies that do as well in front of a camera as Curry, but the NBA game will take some adjusting.

To be honest, second-year shooting guard Anthony Morrow looked quite a bit better than Curry on the whole, which means there will be Morrow to consider in that crowded backcourt as well. Now the record holder for single-game scoring in a Summer League game with 47 points, he's made a case for minutes, too.
