I think that the best thing might be to add Stony Brook and Albany as football affiliates and Appalachian State as an all-sports member.

That kinda makes sense, but I'm not sure App State is interested.
I can see them adding
Stony Brook to CAA Football because it would help travel/scheduling:
CAA FB North - Maine, UNH, SBU, 'Nova, Delaware
CAA FB South - ODU, Richmond, W&M, JMU, Towson
With an 8-game CAA schedule, each team would play 4 opponents from each division, requiring just 2 road games vs. non-division foes, thus limiting the travel burden.
However, the CAA would still need 1 basketball program (and ideally a travel partner for UNCW). I think
College of Charleston or
UNC-Greensboro would fit that need perfectly.

Or, a simple soultion would be to just add
Coastal Carolina to the CAA as it would get CAA football to 10 members and the CAA to an even 12 with "travel partners"
CAA FB North - Maine, UNH, 'Nova, Delaware, Towson
CAA FB South - Coastal Carolina, ODU, Richmond, W&M, JMU
Northeastern/Hofstra
Delaware/Drexel
Towson/George Mason
JMU/VCU
W&M/ODU
UNCW/Coastal Carolina
