Time to put the other thread to bed...turn to next season. Article in DDN today about building around Dillard next season. He's coming off a 13.3 and 6.0 season and looks to be the number #1 or #2 (Chaz Williams being the other) PG in the league next year.

http://www.daytondailynews.com/dayt...o-build-around-dillard-next-year-1345668.html

“Kevin Dillard, with a great offseason, will be able to hold his own against any guard in the country next year,” Miller said.

And the Flyers, who exceeded expectations by going 20-13 and reaching the postseason for the fifth straight year, likely will be able to surround him with an even better supporting cast.

Center Matt Kavanaugh, though limited defensively, had a breakout junior season. He averaged 9.0 points and 5.9 rebounds and was the only player in the league in the top 10 in field-goal percentage (54.6) and foul shooting (80.7).

Sophomore wing Devin Oliver averaged 9.6 points and 7.4 rebounds in a seven-game stint as a starter at the end of the season. And junior forward Josh Benson, who suffered a season-ending knee injury Dec. 30, averaged 10.9 points and 5.2 boards before being sidelined and is expected to make a full recovery.

“Vee to me is the most talented, gifted scorer on our team,” Miller said. “One of the things I look forward to is Vee making plays for others and himself where Kevin isn’t involved with every play. ... Both Matt and Vee both bring us an added dimension in scoring.

The Flyers finished 9-7 in the A-10 even without Benson, ending up in a tie for fifth. In six previous seasons, they produced a winning league record just once, and their average finish in that span was seventh.

“I thought our kids did an amazing job being coachable,” Miller said. “And I think we did have a really good year. It could have gone in a lot of different directions at different times.

“When we lost Josh ... that was a make-or-break deal for our team. I give them credit for their character level, and I thought our staff did a nice job to continue to morph our team in different ways to be successful.”

I've seen Scott in person in the last month. He already is a big man. I have to think he's gonna be the immediate back up to Benson and can play 12-18 min per game. So much more depth this season

"49 pounds in six months" has to be a mistake. That only happens when Sumo wrestlers eat pure lard for every meal.
... or maybe steroids?

Kevin Dillard will be facing some good non-conference competition in his preparations for the Atlantic 10 Conference schedule.

Best of the Best: The Top 10 Point Guards (Jason King, ESPN - October 30, 2012)

1. Isaiah Canaan, Murray State

The Racers senior has posted a double-figure scoring average in each of his three seasons. In 2011-12, he poured in 19 points a contest for a squad that went 31-2. Even more impressive is that Canaan shot 45.6 percent from beyond the arc while ranking first in the Ohio Valley Conference with 98 made 3-pointers. A preseason All-American, Canaan is generously listed at 6-foot-1, but he’s likely an inch or two shorter. He makes up for his lack of height with upper-body strength that makes him deadly on NBA-range 3-pointers and hard to stop when he’s slashing to the basket.

3. Pierre Jackson, Baylor

Perry Jones III, Quincy Acy and Quincy Miller were all selected in the NBA draft. But the Bears never would’ve won a school-record 30 games and reached the Elite Eight if not for Jackson, who led Baylor in points (13.8) and assists (5.9) while shooting 82.2 percent from the foul stripe. There aren’t many guards in America as quick as Jackson, who brought a swagger and toughness to a squad that had long been considered soft. The Big 12’s preseason player of the year, Jackson must step up his leadership even more as the Bears attempt to incorporate freshmen such as Isaiah Austin and Rico Gathers into the rotation.

On September 14, 2012, Xavier lost Myles Davis and Jalen Reynolds for the 2012-13 season, leaving Chris Mack with only 8 scholarshipped players on his Roster.

Consequently, Xavier drops from # 10 to # 13 in Rev. 1 of Muddy's Predictions.

NONCON FORECAST: 9-5

A-10 FORECAST: 9-7

OVERALL PREDICTION: 18-12

Dayton has a tough schedule and things could be very bumpy early on, but there's a lot of home cooking to finish strong.

Arkansas State returns four starters including star guard Trey Finn and the team is expected to contend for the Sunbelt title. Arkansas State, coached by former LSU headman John Brady, upset Bonaventure in Olean last year, so this is a dangerous game.

Colorado won the Pac 10 last year and they have a good nucleus back from a 24-win team. Forward Andre Roberson is one of the league's best players.

I see Dayton losing to the Buffs and then getting nipped by a much improved BC squad in the second game. BC's frontcourt can hang with the Flyers but the PG slot is unsettled. Dilliard has to have a big game for the Flyers to pull the game out.

Final game of the Charleston classic could involve a game with either Charleston, St Johns, Auburn or Murray State. All have question marks but are beatable. I call it a win.

Back home Dayton gets another rude shock from a Manhattan team that won 21 games and returns all five starters, including standout guard George Beamon. Speedy Jaspers stun the home crowd.

Flyers get back on track with home wins over rebuilding Northern Illinois (5-26) and a good Weber State team that has to replace three starters, including its point guard and NBA lottery pick Damian Lilliard.

A trip to Alabama results in a loss. Tide is younger than last year's 21-win team - no more JaMychal Green or Tony Mitchell - and ripe for an upset, but I see Alabama avenging last year's loss in Dayton.

Back home again, the Flyers rip off wins vs Miami Ohio, Florida Atlantic, Illinois State and Murray State. Miami replaces longtime coach Charlie Coles and his methodical approach that often bothered Dayton. Florida Atlantic, coached by former GW boss Mike Jarvis, lost four key players to tranfer and is rebuilding.

Illinois State might have one of its best teams in years and should contend for the MVC title. Big forward Jackie Carmichael is a star and the team is full of good shooters. Flyers need this game and squeak out a home victory.

Murray State, meanwhile, lost three starters from its 30-win team and won't be quite as good. Another tough game that Dayton pulls out.

USC only won 6 games last season, but the team gets back a lot of healthy veterans who returned from injury, including former Fordham starting PG Jio Fontan. West Coast trips are always tough.

Dayton ends its noncon slate with a win over UAB, which replaced coach Mike Davis and has a thin roster.

WH's 2012-2013 A-10 Predictions (Muddy Waters, 2012-2013 Dayton Flyers Post # 338 - October 1, 2012)

BEST A-10 POINT GUARDS

1) Tyreek Duren, LaSalle

2) Chaz Williams, Massachusetts

3) Kevin Dillard, Dayton

Dillard is an excellent distributor and creator who handles the ball like a yo-yo on a string. He runs an offense as well as any guard in the A-10 and can get his own shots, too.

4) Kwamain Mitchell, St. Louis

5) Darius Theus, VCU
Kevin Dillard 2011-12 Game Log (Yahoo!)

Most Points: 23 vs. Iowa on March 13, 2012.

Most Assists: 13 vs. Rhode Island on January 28, 2012.

Memorable Performances:

19 points and 10 assists vs. Minnesota on November 27, 2011.

18 points and 10 assists vs. Saint Louis on January 4, 2012.

BEST A-10 SHOOTING GUARDS

1) Khalif Wyatt, Temple

2) Langston Galloway, St. Joseph’s

3) Ramon Galloway, LaSalle

4) Rotnei Clarke, Butler

5) Kendall Anthony, Richmond.
BEST A-10 SMALL FORWARDS

1) Demitrius Conger, Bonaventure

2) Raphiael Putney, Massachusetts

3) Halil Kanocevic, St. Joseph’s

4) Scootie Randall, Temple

5)Khyle Marshall, Butler
BEST A-10 POWER FORWARDS

1) Chris Gaston, Fordham

2) Chris Braswell, Charlotte

3) Ron Roberts Jr., St. Joseph’s

4) Derrick Williams, Richmond

5) Jerrell Wright, LaSalle

Dayton’s Josh Benson and GW's David are obviously fine players with all-league potential. Benson has always been a guy who, on paper and when you see him physically, should be among the league's best inside players. Pellom is an excellent defender who's terrific in transition, but his offense has always been the underwater side of his game.

I left both of the list because of injuries.
Josh Benson 2011-12 Game Log (Yahoo!)

Most Points: 21 vs. Western Illinois on November 12, 2011.

Most Rebounds: 9 vs. Seton Hall on December 21, 2011.

BEST A-10 CENTERS

1) CJ Aiken, St. Joseph's

2) Juvonte Reddic, VCU

3) Matt Kavanaugh, Dayton

The Flyers' plodding and cheerfully annoying bigman (9 ppg, 6 rpb, 55% FG) might as well wear a lunch bucket on his head. Kavanaugh's game is all about effort, hustle - and smart positioning. He is not especially athletic and gets his shots blocked a lot, but Kavanaugh persists. He scores a lot on his own followups and actually has soft hands and a nice touch around the basket. He an excellent free-throw shooter at 80%, too.

4) Andrew Smith, Butler

5) Anthony Lee, Temple
Matt Kavanaugh 2011-12 Game Log (Yahoo!)

Most Points: 23 vs. La Salle on January 14, 2012.

Most Rebounds: 13 vs. Wake Forest on November 24, 2011.

Memorable Performance: Xavier 86, Dayton 83, OT at Cintas Center (Yahoo! Box Score - February 18, 2012)
C Matt Kavanaugh: 11 points and 11 rebounds.

C Kenny Frease: 5 points and 3 rebounds.

(Tu Holloway, Mark Lyons, and Dez Wells combined for 64 of Xavier’s 86 points.)

Thoughts on new season

Dayton has a fine point guard in Kevin Dilliard and two solid bigmen in Josh Benson and Matt Kavanaugh. After that, though, and there lots of questions. Vee Sandford, Georgetown transfer, will have to step in and step up right away. Hard for me to see this team getting to the postseason given what I know now. An above-.500 team, probably, but not much more.

1) St. Louis
2) St. Joe’s
3) Temple

Ranking the A-10 Coaches

1) Fran Dunphy (444-228)

2) Brad Stevens (139-40)

3) Shaka Smart (84-28)

4) Chris Mack (73-30)

Mack might be the best recruiter in the league and he is an above-average coach. He gives his players some freedom in a somewhat structured offense and his teams are tough defensively. His coaching acumen will get sorely tested this year with a thin, young roster and the league will learn a lot more about him.

5) Phil Martelli (313-216)

6) Chris Mooney, Richmond. (146-115)

7) Archie Miller, Dayton (20-13)

Miller hit the ground running, though he had a solid roster with which to work. He’s also recruited very well in a season and a half. Another young coach from a family with a long pedigree, Miller showed good X and Os on both sides of the ball in his first year and maximized the talent on his roster – the first sign of any fine coach. One year is too little to judge, however.

8) Derrick Kellogg, Massachusetts (64-65)

9) Mark Schmidt, Bonaventure (156-170)

10) John Giannini, LaSalle (244-239)

11) Mike Lonergan, GW (136-89)

12) Tom Pecora, Fordham (172-166)

13) Alan Major, Charlotte (23-36).

13-3 in this Atlantic 10? I don't think so. Not with that front court.
Dayton actually has a pretty good front court this season.

Devin Oliver is a junior combo-forward who improved very significantly during his sophomore year at UD after replacing the injured Josh Benson.

Archie Miller inserted Oliver as the starting PF in the Flyers' last seven games of the 2011-12 season, and Oliver responded by scoring 67 ponts in those seven games (9.6 PPG).

Oliver also grabbed 52 rebounds in those seven games (7.4 RPG) as the Flyers' starting PF.

Dayton Knocks Out George Washington 67-50 (The Associated Press - March 6, 2012)

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) -- Devin Oliver scored a season-high 19 points and Dayton defeated George Washington for the second time in four days, taking a 67-50 win Tuesday night in the first round of the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament.

Dayton 67, George Washington 50 (Yahoo! Box Score - March 6, 2012)

Devin Oliver led all players in the game with 19 points, shooting 8-13 from the field, 1-1 from beyond the arc, and 2-3 from the FT line, to go along with a team-leading 8 rebounds.

z8 and Muddy are on fire tonight. Their predictions are pure comedy.

P.S.- Muddy, that last post I think you've posted close to a dozen times already this week, and probably 100 since the end of last season. No one read it or clicked any of your links the first time, probably aren't doing it now. Save us all some scrolling...

If UD does beat Xavier finally, at least it will be after Jan. 20. Carter, Reagan (2), Bush, Clinton (2), Bush (2), Obama, Romney. Sad, sad state of affairs in Flyer land.

Those predictions are a little ambitious even for you Muddy. I appreciate the loss at Umass, but undefeated at home - I don't think so.... You will struggle at LaSalle and St Joes at home should be a loss too. I can almost get on board with 11 wins considering you get most of the tough opponents at home, but you still haven't shaken the curse of Archie's predecessor (who's name I shall not repeat) so I will say........ Oh I don't know....... let's go with 8-8.....

Muddy actually has a point, Dayton's front court should be solid, and could be very good if Benson can be what he was before the injury. Kavanaugh is solid, I would expect growth from Gavrilovic and Oliver, and they add two impressive freshmen who should be able to give quality minutes.

The backcourt will determine Dayton's level of success this year. Dillard is great, and I love what I hear about Sanford. Derenbecker and Oliver can give minutes at the 2. Khari Price is a total unknown. The talent is there, but depth isn't. Need to stay healthy.

I feel pretty good about this team. Not going to predict 13-3. That would be like saying a 3 handicap is going to shoot 69, possible but very unlikely. But I see no reason why this team can't go 11-5 given reasonable health.

^^^I'm seriously worried about the game in Cincy this year because you're right. XU was a lot better on the "pre season paper" last year then UD and we almost pulled it out in OT at Cincy. UD is without a doubt (if Davis and Reynolds aren't playing) better on paper then XU this preseason....we will lose by 17 down there.

You probably also blame only the Republicans or only the Democrats for the steaming cesspool that is our government right now.

If every person on this board this feels the need to respond to Muddy's rant just put him on ignore, the issue would die quickly. Every X fan that responds in length to his posts, just gives him what he wants and continues the problem. It takes more than 1 to tango, the problem doesn't lie soley w/ Muddy or any 1 poster.

#251 ·
Did you guys miss this summer without Muddy?

A single poster was banned and this board was a totally different board. That's not an opinion. But rather was proven by what actually took place.

I only respond to about a third of Muddy's baiting. There are only so many lies, exaggerations, misinformation, half-truths and one-sided delusioned reporting I can let go without setting the record straight with facts.

#252 ·
I gotta be honest. I didn't even know Muddy was on "vacation". There are a group of several folks who will find any excuse to go after the other side. The idea of some utopia without him is quite the fallacy.

#253 · (Edited by Moderator)
You are incorrect. The whole mood of the board was different. Dayton supporters were able to have some real live debates and differences of opinion without it turning into a pissing match. Nobody gave a crap about the other two from the "triumverate" in that their normally ridiculous comments were not treated as such.

The day that edited came back to the board you could instantly tell without even seeing one of his posts. I'm tellin ya, an A-10 board without Muddy is a much more sane and pleasant place to be.... Did you not notice the lack of vitriol during that glorious break?

#255 · (Edited)
I only knew because you all went nuts when he came back and figured he was gone for like a week or something. I log on a few times a day to fart around and cure boredom. The only people I notice are gone for long periods are the people who post the best observations or make me laugh consistently. WH, Rosceaux, many UD quality guys like Chet, Elvis, DocFlyer, 75, and bprichard, a few good X guys, the St Joe guys, Ace (the Fordham fan) and a few others from various fan bases. I assume guys, anyway. Some of you may be ladies. I don't know.

I skip right over most Muddy posts. He posts links to the same things I hear, read, and see before I even log in here, and I've never been one to bash any other school just to get my rocks off. I'm already a nerd for being on a message board, I can't afford to lose any more of my sanity. I'm not really his target market.

I probably won't even be around much once the season starts. Twitter is much better. I have good interactions with UD and Xavier fans, among others, and it's easier to block idiots.

From a Dayton alum and relative newcomer to this board: I find that this repartee between Muddy and others to be juvenile, and a waste of my time. I don't read his posts nor do I read those of anyone else when I see a reference to something he posted. Its possible I am missing a good thought by skipping them, but I am not going to waste my time looking for that nugget. On the other hand I like to read the posts from Adam and many other posters even on the non-Dayton threads. I think there are many like myself who no longer live near where we went to school, nor have access or availability to watch the games on tv. While a bias may occasionally appear, your postings can help keep us in touch with what is going on.

.... and is precisely why you should be careful about what kind of crap you spew about other programs and players.

There are many Dayton posters who have taken the high road with the Dez thing and there have been many that have taken the low road (and including a couple cracks about Wyatt too).

To those on the lower road - I say shame on you! You have your heads burried in the sand if you think "your" program is above it all and it only happens at other places and not within your hallowed halls. This kind of garbage (and a lot more) goes on in EVERY program and most of it gets swept under the rug or not reported on a daily basis.

I may be a prick of the highest order around here, but I never subscribe to the holier than thou attitudes that run amok on this board, and if you look at those who I spend/waste my time rebutting around here it is those same posters who think their schidt don't stink....

I hope for the sake of Dayton and the overall good of the A-10 conference, that these rumors are not true. But if they end up being true, all I can say to the Muddy's of the world is that you reap what you sow.....

Not to play super duper insider, but I have heard something was on the horizon for a week or so. It's not good. But it's still in its infancy, many facts are still very much unknown.

#264 · (Edited)
We'll just have to wait and see at this point. Sounds like its narrowed down to 3 potential players with it being only one of them.

From what I can gather from twitter so far, no charges, no arrests. Just allegations right now.
