I agree. It is the most telling statistic in determining how much of an advantage a team has at home. I just don't think it's the only factor, that's all.

For example, comparing schedules is usually an apples to oranges comparison in many cases. Put VCU in the Big East and does it have the same advantage? Or the A-10 for that matter? We'll find out this season in the case of the A-10. Xavier's home court winning percentage is extremely impressive because they can schedule top competition to play them in the OOC at home. Others choose to play cupcakes or can't get established teams to come to their place. Many power-6 schools are below schools like Xavier, VCU, Temple, Dayton etc. but then we aren't usually facing the UNC's, Duke's, Georgetown, and Kentucky's of the world at home every year either.

There are several extremely tough venues to play at in the A-10. I'd like to think VCU will be among them.

ED MCLAUGHLIN NAMED VCU DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

RICHMOND, Va. (July 24, 2012) – Virginia Commonwealth University President Michael Rao today introduced Ed McLaughlin as VCU’s new director of athletics, effective Aug. 13.

McLaughlin has been athletics director at Niagara University since 2006 and is credited with leading the greatest period of athletic success in that school’s history, improving the student-athlete experience and winning more conference titles in his six years at Niagara than in the previous 75 years combined.

McLaughlin, 39, was chosen after a national search that produced more than 50 exceptional candidates.

Here's an article from ESPN's Dave Telep and Paul Biancardi on VCU's recruiting in 2012 and how the move to the A-10 has changed things: http://aroundthehorns.wordpress.com/2012/07/25/vcu-blazing-new-trails-on-recruiting-front/

“This is the first year I can remember where a [non-power six conference] program not named Gonzaga has had two top 100 players,” said Dave Telep, recruiting guru and ESPN senior national basketball analyst.
ESPN Director of Recruiting Paul Biancardi also believes in Smart’s growing prominence on the recruiting trail.

“I see it as the culmination of all the ingredients,” he said. “Kids want to be somewhere where there has been success and they look at the coach. Kids, at the end of the day, look to who is coaching the team. Shaka will have that [Final Four] on his resume forever.”

As much as Smart’s presence matters when courting recruits, there is a real “A-10 effect”, some say.

“I do see it as significant,” Telep said. “When you’re sitting in the living room of a kid, you’re now selling a multi-bid league. It does raise the profile of the school to a degree. Changing leagues, having multiple bids, being on TV and being able to sell that.”

Yep. It's being touted as the best preseason tournament in the country this year. Louisville pulled out of Maui to play in it.

VCU will have some chances to notch up some signature wins against Duke, Louisville, Memphis, Missouri, Stanford, Minnesota, and UNI.

The first 4 were NCAA teams, the next 2 played for the NIT championship, and the last was also in the NIT. Solid field.

We also had one of our last remaining unreleased games leaked today. VCU will welcome Belmont to the Siegel Center December 1st. The Bruins went 27-8 and fell to Georgetown in the first (second) round of the NCAAs last year. We will make a return trip to Nashville next season.

RAMS TAKE ITALIAN TOUR OPENER OVER
AMICI DEL CAMPERO, 118-71

CASTELLANZA, Italy – It looks like HAVOC translates to all languages.

Devastazione, the Italian word for HAVOC, was displayed in the opener of VCU Basketball's four-game Italian tour as the Rams forced 29 turnovers in a 118-71 victory over Amici Del Campero.

Leading the way with his all around play was rising sophomore Teddy Okereafor who poured in 17 points, dished out nine assists and grabbed seven rebounds in the victory. Five other Rams scored in double-figures on the evening.

VCU returns to the hardwood for the second game in Italy on Friday at 1 p.m. EST when they battle Basket Club Zeta Golubovci.

VCU won their 3rd game of their Italian tour today 85-47 over BC Atletas from Lithuania. This same opponent knocked down 16 3's to beat Georgia 94-90 and trailed Tennesssee by 3 at half-time before falling 82-68 earlier in the week.

The Rams beat Kosarkaski Klub Zeta from Montenegro by a score of 103-32 in the second game.

Encouraging but not entirely meaningful scores to be sure. It is nice to see the Rams man-handled a team that a couple of SEC squads had some trouble with though. I don't believe either UGA or Tennessee are supposed to be all that good this year though.

GRAHAM, RAMS MOVE TO 2-0 ON ITALIAN TOUR

FLORENCE, Italy – HAVOC is in the midst of a global tour and after two appearances, it's making quite a name for itself.

In the second game of their Italian tour, the VCU Basketball team forced 39 turnovers and shot 54% from the field in a 103-32 victory over Kosarkaski Klub Zeta from Montenegro.

Rising sophomore Treveon Graham was the player of the game for the Black & Gold with 17 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals, while shooting 6-of-11 from the field.

The Rams are back in action tomorrow night against a talented Lithuanian squad at 1:30 p.m. EST.

RAMS MOVE TO 3-0 IN ITALY
WITH 85-47 DEFEAT OF LITHUANIAN CLUB

FLORENCE, Italy – While they've thoroughly enjoyed touring some Italy's most historic sites, the VCU basketball is taking time to make sure that the world knows all about HAVOC.

For the third time in as many games, the Rams forced 30+ turnovers en route to a 85-47 victory over Basket Club Atletas from the Lithuanian First Division.

Rising senior Troy Daniels earned player of the game accolades with 27 points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals. He knocked down eight three-pointers on the evening.

VCU plays their final game of their Italian tour in Rome on Monday evening.

Atletas fell to Arkansas 95-84 today: http://www.arkansasrazorbacks.com/V...421&DB_LANG=C&ATCLID=205585645&DB_OEM_ID=6100

Atletas beat Georgia by 4, and Purdue by 3, lost to Arkansas by 11, and Tennessee by 14. VCU forced 30+ turnovers and won by 38.

It ultimately means nothing, but it's nice to look at if you're a VCU fan.

VCU also wrapped up its Italy tour with a 106-44 win over All-Star Italy to go to 4-0 on the trip. Rising sophomore Jarred Guest was the player of the game with 19 points, 9 boards, 6 steals, and 2 blocks.

VCU has sold out 18 consecutive games going into this season. It looks like VCU is poised to continue that streak having sold-out all of our season tickets today: http://vcuathletics.com/sports/mbkb/2012-13/releases/2012082902jn0f

VCU also has 2,000 seats every game set apart for students. We have our student spirit organization the Rowdy Rams which were alloted 1,500 spots with a $25 dollar membership fee which gives them a separate line from the students which enters the arena before the general student population. They started selling the memberships with the start of class and have sold out all 1,500 memberships in 1 week.

There is a lot of enthusiasm for the upcoming season here at VCU. The Siegel Center looks to be an electric venue in its inaugural A-10 season.
