Frost Heaves to host open tryout

Cornwall, VT. The ABA Vermont Frost Heaves announced today that Rice Memorial High School in South Burlington, VT will host the team's inaugural open tryout camp over the weekend of June 30, July 1 and July 2.

Space permitting, the public is welcome to watch the camp, which will begin on Friday, June 30 at 3pm with sign-ins and measurements, followed by several hours of workouts led by coach Will Voigt. On Saturday Coach Voigt will lead two sessions, from 9am to 1pm and from 3pm to 6pm. The camp winds up on Sunday with a single 9am to 1pm session.

Ballplayers may go to www.vermontfrostheaves.com/camps/tryout to access the application and waiver forms. To qualify for the "early-bird" rate of $100 for Vermonters and $125 for non-Vermonters, both forms must be filled out, signed and returned to the Frost Heaves by June 22, along with a cashier's check or certified check for the applicable fee. A surcharge of $50 will apply to any player who registers after June 22 or at the door. Campers may also pay the early registration fee online with a Mastercard or Visa. Vermonters will qualify for the discounted rate if they can prove current residency with a valid driver's license, or supply evidence that they played high school or college basketball in the state.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old on June 30, 2006 to participate and are encouraged to enclosed a recent game tape in VHS or DVD format with their registration materials. All campers will receive a Frost Heaves tryout camp jersey that will be theirs to keep.

"The Frost Heaves are committed to giving Vermont-connected basketball players an honest look," said team president and G.M. Alexander Wolff, who is writing about the birth and life of the Frost Heaves for Sports Illustrated and si.com and will file dispatches from the camp. "To offer an "in-state" rate is the least we can do to encourage locals to show us what they've got, and Coach Voigt and I hope that as many as possible take advantage."

"As excited as we are to be taking these critical steps to building our team, we're just as happy that the public will be able to watch," Wolff added. "And to hold our first tryout camp at Rice, on Bernie Cieplicki Court in Bill Hammond Gym, with all those championship banners hanging overhead, should give everyone on hand a sense of being part of Vermint hoops history."

The Frost Heaves begin play in the ABA in November. They will split their 18 home games between the Barre Municapal Auditorium and Burlington's Memorial Auditorium.
