Indianapolis, IN. The American Basketball Association (ABA) today announced that Mexicali, Mexico will have a team in the professional basketball league when play begins in November. "Basketball is extremely popular in Mexico," said Joe Newman, ABA CEO, "and we are pleased to add another great Mexican city to the league. The team will be playing many of our SoCal teams and New Mexico teams and should draw extremely well there and at home too. We are also very pleased with the ownership group led by Mexicali businessman, David Alejandro Perada, the owner of Las Chabelas de la Justo, one of Mexicali's most popular tourist cantina-type restaurant/lbars. Mr. Perada is also the Administration Director, Secretary of Infrastructure & Urban Development for Baja California State Government in Mexicali and former Purchasing Director for Baja California State Government.
Mr. Perada added, "We have followed the ABA for several years and are very impressed with this league and the exciting caliber of basketball. The people of Mexicali will really enjoy it and we will have a very competitive team. We have much to do between now and the beginning of the season - but we are up to it." Also involved in ownership-management is Carlos Thomas, co-owner of the new Monterrey Poison ABA expansion team.
