Re: Horizon League recruiting

Detroit-Mercy was definitely hurt by losing their coach (Perry Watson I believe). I still can't believe they can't land some of the mid-major types in Detroit year in and year out. If Watson couldn't do it you know damn well others will struggle as well.

Raiders Sign Junior College All-American
Cooperwood second JUCO player to sign with Raiders for 2008-09

Cory Cooperwood averaged 15.6 points and eight rebounds in his two seasons at Wallace State

http://wsuraiders.cstv.com/sports/m-...042108aad.html

April 21, 2008

Cory Cooperwood, a two-time junior college All-American at Wallace State Community College in Hanceville, Alabama, has signed a letter of intent to attend Wright State University and play for the Raiders next fall, WSU head coach Brad Brownell announced Monday.

Cooperwood, a 6-7, 215-pound forward, averaged 15.1 points and 8.1 rebounds last season as Wallace State posted a 32-1 overall record. Ranked the 22nd best junior college player in the nation by jucojunction.com, the Kensett, Arkansas, native also collected 50 blocks while starting in every game. He also shot 58% from the field and 70% from the free throw line.

"We are extremely pleased to have Cory join our program," Brownell said. "He is a talented player who has played pivotal roles on successful teams at the high school and junior college levels. Cory plays the game with a great deal of energy and consistently makes plays at both ends of the floor. He will add athleticism and rebounding to our front court."

As a freshman, Cooperwood averaged 16.2 points and 8.0 rebounds along with 50 blocks, 42 steals and 53 assists en route to being named the Alabama Junior College Player of the Year for the first of two times.

The Raiders have lost two starters to graduation from last year's 21-10 squad. During the early signing period, Wright State signed 6-8 Jeron Lewis of Northeastern Community College in Sterling, Colorado.

Re: Horizon League recruiting

BBALL, I disagree about Detroit being hurt by losing Perry Watson. Watson needed to go. Detroit's talent level the last couple of years has slipped tremendously... Kids in Detroit didn't want to play Watson's slow pace, half-court, defensive style of basketball... I think McCallum is the perfect fit for Detroit. He has a good track record of developing Mid-major talent. He developed Bonzi Wells and turned him to an NBA player. He turned Ball State into one of the best MAC teams. The Titans should be in good hands with Ray McCallum.

Re: Horizon League recruiting

UDM Signs Indiana Transfer Eli Holman
May 9, 2008

New UDM head coach Ray McCallum continued his retooling of the Titan men's basketball roster with today's addition of transfer Eli Holman, a 6-9, 250-pound center who played last winter as a freshman at Indiana University.

McCallum spent the last two seasons on the IU basketball staff and is well-acquainted with the newest Titan, who was part of a recruiting class ranked among the top five in the country for 2006-07. Holman played in six games as a Big Ten freshman before being sidelined for the rest of last season with a wrist injury.

"I'm really happy that Eli made the decision to come to UDM. I think me having been at Indiana and recruiting him was a big reason why he went there and he had a great opportunity there. But when you're involved in a young man's life for two years, you obviously build a relationship that he cared about and respected and he wanted it to continue," coach McCallum said.

"With his size, he's an athletic player who can finish around the basket, he can block shots, he rebounds, he has good hands, he's a good runner. I think the next phase for him is to continue to grow as a player in our practices. I'm glad he's here with us."

Holman, a native of Richmond, CA, looks at his transfer to UDM as an opportunity to have a fresh start in his college career.

"I want to thank Indiana University for the time that I spent there. I was treated fairly by all the people connected to the University. But, at this time, I think that it is in the best interest for me and my family to transfer to the University of Detroit Mercy. I wish Indiana University the best of luck," Holman said.

"Coach Mac is a big reason why I'm here. He recruited me out of high school, and he's been like a father figure to me. I think he'll make an impact on the University. He's going to put some more (championship) banners up in the arena and he's going to get us to the NCAA Tournament. I want to help him do that. I found out right away there are some great people on this campus. I'm very comfortable with my choice."

Holman, who has already started summer classes at UDM, was considered among the nation's top 100 prospects when he signed with the Hoosiers. He averaged 24.7 points, 12 rebounds and 10 blocks as a senior at Richmond High School, helping his team to the state Division II championship. He was also named the top defensive player in Northern California.

Holman is the third heralded recruit to sign with UDM since McCallum's hiring in mid-April, following junior college forwards Thomas Kennedy (Flint [MI] Mott CC) and Xavier Keeling (Wallace State [AL] CC). Kennedy was a second-team NJCAA All-American in 2008 after leading Mott to its second straight national championship. Keeling, who began his college career at Indiana, helped Wallace State to a 32-1 record and a berth in the Alabama Community College Conference championship game last season.

"I like the three players we've added," McCallum said. "I felt like we needed more front line help. The three of them have good size for their positions. They're versatile players. They have great work ethics, and they're great people. Collectively, they are going to improve our program. They're winners. They came from good programs and that's important. Winning breeds winning."

Coach McCallum also announced Wednesday that two members of the 2007-08 UDM roster, centers Justin Sample and Russell Allen, have been given their releases. McCallum is in the process of assisting both players as they pursue transfers to other universities.

Tallest Titan Ever, 7-3 Jason Bennett, Signs With UDM
May 14, 2008

New UDM men's basketball coach Ray McCallum has signed a center who will be the Titans' tallest player ever with today's addition of 7-3, 275-pound transfer Jason Bennett to the team roster.

The fourth player signed since McCallum took over the Titan program on April 11, Bennett is a transfer from Tallahassee (FL) Community College. He was considered a Top 50 recruit in high school at Arlington Country Day in Jacksonville, and played his freshman year of college at Kansas State. There, Bennett quickly showed the shot-blocking prowess that made him a recruiting priority for coach McCallum, as he rejected 50 attempts on the year and set a school record with eight blocks in one game alone against Chicago State.

"I've followed Jason's career for a long time, and he's set records for blocking shots every place he's been. He's proven as a shot blocker and he'll definitely add that dimension to our team next season," McCallum said. "He has great size. He has the ability to be one of the best shot blockers in the country. That and rebounding are the strengths Jason will bring to our team."

The opportunities to both play for coach McCallum, and showcase his defensive skills, are what drew Bennett to becoming a Titan, he said.

"I've probably known coach McCallum since my sophomore year. He's been following me for a while. I like the program, and I like the idea of being at a smaller school, with smaller classes. I can't wait to get up there to Detroit and play for coach McCallum," Bennett observed. "I've always been able to block shots ever since I started playing basketball. I always heard that defense wins games. That's pretty much my main thing so hopefully I'll be able to help the team win some games with the way I play."

At 7-3, Bennett will be the fourth seven-footer in school history and first since John Beauford played for Detroit in 1990-91.

Bennett helped Tallahassee CC to a 17-10 record last winter, averaging a whopping 3.7 blocks a game to go with 5.8 points and 5.4 rebounds. Earlier, he was a first-team Florida All-State selection as a senior at Arlington Country Day. Bennett helped the Apaches post a 169-22 record during his varsity career, which included consecutive Class 2A State Championships in 2005 and 2006. He helped ACD to a 27-3 record in 2005-06 and a No. 14 ranking in the USA Today Super 25 High School rankings.

Bennett is the fourth heralded recruit to sign with UDM since McCallum's hiring, following 6-7 junior college forwards Thomas Kennedy (Flint [MI] Mott CC) and Xavier Keeling (Wallace State [AL] CC), along with Indiana University transfer Eli Holman, a 6-9 center and former Top 100 recruit in high school. Kennedy was a second-team NJCAA All-American in 2008 after leading Mott to its second straight national championship. Keeling, who began his college career at Indiana, helped Wallace State to a 32-1 record and a berth in the Alabama Community College Conference championship game last season.

Coach McCallum also announced on Wednesday that sophomore guard Mychael Broom, who was injured all last season, will not return to the team next fall.

Men's basketball: Phoenix signs JUCO transfer

Press-Gazette • June 11, 2008

Guard Jesse Childs, who helped Borah High School in Boise, Idaho, win state titles in 2004 and 2005, recently signed a national letter of intent to play basketball for the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, the Idaho Statesman reported on its Web site Tuesday.

Childs, the son of former Boise State guard and NBA star Chris Childs, heads to Green Bay after playing two seasons at Mesa Community College in Mesa, Ariz. He also spent one year with the Boys to Men Academy in Chicago, where he played basketball and dedicated himself to improving his ACT and SAT scores.

"There were other schools, but Green Bay was there from the beginning, and there was definitely some mutual respect there," Childs, who has two years of college eligibility remaining, told the Statesman.

The 6-foot-3, 190-pound Childs averaged 16.5 points, 7.0 assists, 5.0 rebounds and 1.5 steals for Mesa last season.

He was coached during his freshman season by Alton Lister, who left Mesa to become an assistant with the Atlanta Hawks last year.

Childs fills the open scholarship UWGB had after losing recruit Kramer Soderberg to Miami of Ohio.

John Hoskins Jr.(6-9, 215) verbals to Detroit

http://blog.mlive.com/highschoolbask...uck_for_0.html
The University of Detroit has landed a nice long-term prospect with the commitment of 6-foot-9 John Hoskins. Hoskins played at Warren Connor Creek West, a Class D school, last year, but played with Detroit Cody this summer. What you like about Hoskins is that he's tall, long and can shoot. He has post moves and, unlike a lot of young big guys, wants the ball, but he doesn't have the girth to always get in good position to receive it. Strength and toughness will have to be there for the college level, but you can say that about a lot of kids.

Hoskins is Bankhoops.com's No. 4 ranked senior power forward.

They hired McCallum? I didn't notice that. Nevermind addition by subtraction I guess.

Vikings Add Three To Men's Basketball Roster

Aaron Pogue Joins Team As A Tranfer From Vincennes

Aug. 25, 2008

Contact: Brian McCann

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The first day of classes of the 2008-09 school year came on Monday (Aug. 25) at Cleveland State and men's basketball head coach Gary Waters celebrated the day by announcing the addition of three players to the basketball roster.

Joining the Vikings are sophomore Aaron Pogue (Dayton, OH/Dunbar) and freshmen Ethan Anderson (Grand Rapids, MI) and Tim Kamczyc (Strongsville, OH). Pogue will redshirt during the 2008-09 season following his transfer from Vincennes Community College and have three years left starting in 2009-10 while both Anderson and Kamczyc will compete this winter and have four years of eligibility remaining.

"With the addition of Aaron, Tim and Ethan, we have helped to solidify our program for the years to come," Waters said. "Although I don't envision either of these players being able to help this year, I do believe that they have the potential to impact the lineup in the seasons to come."

Pogue, a teammate of CSU's Norris Cole while at Dunbar High, was ranked as the second best power forward in the state after averaging 14.0 points and 14.7 rebounds while helping Dunbar to win its second straight state tournament.

A 6-9, 285-pound forward, he averaged 7.1 points and 5.6 rebounds, starting 14 times in 22 games as a freshman at Vincennes.

Pogue was being looked at by Florida, Pittsburgh, USC, Cincinnati, Louisville, Arizona and Tennessee coming out of high school but elected to play at Vincennes University last year.

"Aaron has the ability to dominate inside through both his rebounding and defensive play," Waters said. "He will use this redshirt season to get accustomed to our program, improve on his skill level and get into the best shape of his life."

Kamczyc, a special mention all-state pick as a senior at Strongsville High, was ranked as one of the top 65 players in the state last year after averaging 26.1 points a game. A second team all-state pick as a quarterback on the football team as well, he threw for over 2,000 yards last season.

"I've watched Tim play basketball since I came to Cleveland and I think that he is the type of player who will fit in perfectly to our program," Waters said. "I love his toughness and athletic ability."

Anderson, a 6-8, 260-pound post player, has played just one season of organized basketball, that coming a year ago at Lee (Maine) Academy. He was an all-state selection in tennis at Grand Rapids (MI) High School.

"Ethan only recently started playing basketball but the improvement that he has shown in a short period of time has been astounding," Waters said. "He has outstanding athletic ability for his size and I foresee good things from him in the future.

The Vikings return four starters and eight lettermen from last year's team that went 21-13 and earned a berth in the NIT.
