Pierre Curtis (PG) Might Be Leaving James Madison; Plans to visit Vermont

Junior reserve guard Joe Posey has been given his release and plans to transfer, new coach Matt Brady said Thursday, while sophomore point guard Pierre Curtis has been granted a conditional release.

Under the conditional release, Brady said, Curtis will retain his scholarship at JMU unless he decides to transfer. Brady said he and Curtis are still negotiating the number of schools Curtis will be allowed to visit.

Curtis, who has started since his freshman season, said he has narrowed his choices to Miami (Fla.), Drake, Vermont and Wyoming.

"He'll be given the opportunity to explore a couple of options," Brady said Thursday afternoon. ".... It's an agreement that we've come to between the two of us.

"I would say to you there's a lot of people in this business that if a player walked in and told him I want to visit other schools, that coach will tell him, ‘See you later, have a good life.' That's really not my intention with this young guy. He just wants to be comfortable and clear-minded if he decides he wants to be at JMU."

Curtis said he "kind of asked" for the release to be sure he makes the right decision.

"There's a lot of personal reasons that I really can't get into, well, I could, but I don't want to get into," said Curtis, who averaged 10.0 points and 4.2 assists per game this season. "I feel like if I explore my options and my decision is to come back, then I know at least I looked and I know this is the best decision for me."

The 6-foot-3 Curtis stressed that he did not ask for the release because of any conflict with Brady. In fact, he said, his conversations with Brady made him more likely to stay than before the new coach arrived two weeks ago.
Does Vermont even have a scholarship available?

Not right now but it could be a pay your way first situation or there may be somebody on there way out.

Re: Pierre Curtis (PG) Might Be Leaving James Madison; Plans to visit Vermont

The connection here must be Gabe Rodriguez, who was Curtis' AAU coach/HS assistant coach at Denver East, before Curtis went prep in NC.

This can definitely be filed in the "pre-mature" category. 1) UVM doesn't have an open scholarship (that we know of, of course...), 2) Even the tone of the article is very wishy-washy: he's not transferring outright, and still has the opportunity to return to JMU. Plus, he mentions that Matt Brady's hiring would actually *help* him stick around, if he chose to (and I don't blame him).

That being said, I'd *love* to see this kid wind up playing at UVM: frankly, I think talent-wise this kid is too good for the AE. He'd immediately be our starting PG, and a stand-out in a guard-oriented league.

Re: Pierre Curtis (PG) Might Be Leaving James Madison; Plans to visit Vermont

Sounds interesting. 10+ppg scorers from the CAA certainly find their niche in the AE no problem.

Coach Lonergan has stated he doesn't plan on recruiting a PG once Mike graduates, and the starting job will be either Vier or Accaoui's, but after watching both play last year, I can't envision either one being the lead guard on this team. I really like both Vier and Accaoui, but I don't think either are capable of the obligatory production that position requires on a good-great basketball team, ie 35+min game, 10-15ppg, 4-6 assists, etc. Truth is though, if Joseph picks up a lot of the scoring slack, which I think he will, and Clark is a scorer, + Blakely of course, then we may not need much scoring out of the PG position and they can be pass-first guys like a Jay Greene.

I think Vier and CoMac are two guys on our team that are more talented then they've probably played at up until this point, but both have been inconsistent and disappointing at worst, they need to improve skill-wise and mentally over the offseason. The idea of Vier being the starting PG after Mike graduates is going to have a lot of people realizing who the most important player has been for our program over those 4 years.

Curtis is on the UVM campus today. He would be a great addition and would give us talent and experience at the point position when Trimboli graduates. Hopefully the visit goes well.

Nice. Good timing, it's skirt season and hopefully there is some nice temps in Burlington today. Hopefully the sun dresses are all out in full force.

UVM campus comes alive in the Spring time.

Re: Pierre Curtis (PG) Might Be Leaving James Madison; Plans to visit Vermont

Looks like our "potential potential transfer" has been upgraded to "potential transfer". This would be huge: he immediately becomes our starting PG in November 09.

Roughly, it probably comes down to something like this: If he wants to be closer to his Denver home, he'll go to Wyoming (Laramie is not all that far from Denver). If he wants to up his stats, playing time, and have the best chance (relatively-speaking) of going to the NCAAs, he'll go to Vermont. If he thinks it over, and realizes the only thing he really didn't like about JMU was the way things were going on the floor, he'll probably stick it out, considering their improved coaching situation.

The funny coincidence in all this is that for all the good advice Curtis is getting from UVM AC Gabe Rodriguez...I'm guessing he's getting just as much good advice from current Wyoming guard, former Denver East teammate, and Gabe's *brother*, Sean Ogirri. Sean and Pierre wouldn't share the floor as Cowboys, as next year is Sean's final season. But we may get a look as to which brother is the better "recruiter", so to speak.

I wonder if Barbosa or Johnson can give him a talk into checking out Baltimore. Or would that be all kinds of illegal?

UVM's got both, whatever floats your boat. That's the beauty of the place.

UVM has some extremely hot co-eds. It was actually named one of the fittest/healthiest universities in some poll a little while ago. It's just that the majority of the school year they are spent under layers upon layers of winter clothing due to the brutal winds off Lake Champlain, which makes the UVM campus the Coldest. Place. On earth in Jan/Feb.

Let me put it this way, I graduated just about 6 years ago, and every girl I run into now that was cute then is even much hotter now- even the hippie girls. They don't tend to stay hippies very long when they are living in the Back Bay or Manhattan.

My apologies for totally objectifying women in this thread as well, but it's the off-season .

Sounds like he plans on making a decision shortly.

Being a current student, I can cosign to all aspects of the above post. The brutal wind off the lake makes coming back from winter break much like Siberia, but once April and May rolls around (like the past 2 weeks when it's been 75 and sunny) It's a great place to go to school.
I hope his visit went well...

If someone chooses Vermont to go to school and then is surprised the winter is cold ... How did they get into college in the first place?

Re: Pierre Curtis (PG) Might Be Leaving James Madison; Plans to visit Vermont

According to CC.com it looks like Curtis has decided to stay at JMU. Makes sense, with a new coach coming in it's like being on a new team w/out having to sit a year. Matt Brady is also a very solid coach, he was the assistant at St. Joe's for a number of years and was pretty instrumental behind the development of Jameer Nelson.
