Re: UMaine athletics: Worst year in history?

What suprises me most about this series of posts is that I imagine Maine to be the flagship university for the state. I've said some of the same things about Saint Louis University, but here we have the elephant in the room of SPUMAC (which is a colorful way of saying Mizzou). Good luck up there...sounds like your fans could use some good news.

The bold face IS the key to the future of the entire dept. Tough decisions need to be made which means...........none will be made.........same old, same old.

Re: UMaine athletics: Worst year in history?

The University of Maine has not won a game against Division I competition in any sport since November 28, when Maine defeated Northeastern in men's basketball.

This has been your "The University of Maine is an embarrassment to America East" fact of the day.

Maine at one point last night missed 20 consecutive field goals.

Re: UMaine athletics: Worst year in history?

I wonder how much money UMaine is spending per loss?

Or even scarier........how much UMaine is spending per win!

Re: UMaine athletics: Worst year in history?

For women's basketball if they want to keep their coaches in Maine they should look at the coaches at Colby & Bowdoin. Both are relatively young and have decent success in a few short years at the school, of course both are struggling this year however because each lost a lot of the starting lineup.
Can't say anything for men's basketball. The teams in Maine (they I know first hand) either the teams aren't very good, or the coaches are old neither of which would be a good higher.

Veilleux at Colby is too young to judge. The current UVM coach had Colby trending upwards but the team lost a lot from last year, hence the struggle this year. She needs a few years of sustained success.

Shibles is a no. Bowdoin was D3 royalty when she took over and the program is quickly falling to mediocrity in the NESCAC and is behind USM and maybe even UNE for D3 programs in Maine.

Gromacki will end up being a great hire by some program if he ever decides to leave Amherst, he's as much of a guaranteed success as Pemper was when she left for Navy.

Gromacki (women) and Bob Walsh (men's coach at RIC) are going to be great hires if a D 1 program ever decides to hire them AND they want to leave their current employers.

I'll give you a nickel if Damien Strahorn ever coaches anywhere but Colby. After Dick Whitmore's 40 years, you may see Strahorn stick around for 30.

He started his coaching career (albeit 1 season) @ Plymouth state in New Hampshire. If that counts, I'll take my nickel But your right, he ain't leaving Colby anytime soon.

Well, right. And he was at Columbia, I believe. But Colby was looking for an alum and a life.

Re: UMaine athletics: Worst year in history?

If Maine is going to avoid going an entire month without winning a game in any sport (Nov. 28 last win), these are the remaining opportunities:

12/22: MBB v. Florida Gulf Coast
12/28: MIH v. Minnesota-Duluth in Estero, Florida
12/28: WBB @ James Madison

WIH: no games

I remember the days of Billy Swift and the College World Series. Maine represented New England well in those days.

Florida Gulf Coast beat Miami earlier this season. That's probably not going to happen given they have been losing to Army and Marist by around 30pts each.
