I get that for the high-major players, transferring to a better program, and/or someplace you'll get more playing time, etc., makes sense -- this is their vocational training, and (at least for many of them) the education is peripheral rather than the central point.

But for good mid-major players, I'd really hope that the kids (and their parents) don't lose sight of what ought to matter most. But I daresay I'm naive.

Re Duquesne, yes, there are now some open scholarship slots. But doesn't it raise the question of why?

Reading the quote from their outgoing point guard, it's pretty much fill-in-the-blank stuff, usable almost anywhere by almost anyone:
Quote:
“[Player] is very thankful for the opportunity that [Coach] gave him,” [Player's Dad] told the [Local Media]. “He loves [Coach] and we can't say enough good things about him. [Player] just feels like he would like to try and play at a higher level.”
I'd hate to lose Four, and I hope he wants to stay at UVM. But if not, no point in him staying.

Not only do kids' heads get turned, so do their parents'... sometimes even more so, which diminishes their ability to see the bigger picture and help their kid make good long-term decisions.

Maybe I'm just jealous of parents whose kids are getting free rides at great schools, as I contemplate how to manage two kids in college next fall...

Re: Outbound Transfers Catch-All Thread

Duquesne only makes sense because it's in PA and in the A10.

Everything else about it does not. I couldn't picture him wanting to play for Everhart of darkness over Becker. Plus, pretty sure that was a school he could have already chosen before.

Re: Outbound Transfers Catch-All Thread

I don't know why Four would want to transfer in the first place. From what I can see/gather he LOVES UVM, he LOVES coach Becker and his playing time is only going to go up. The fans love him and he's going to start next year.

Re: Outbound Transfers Catch-All Thread

I am more concerned about a transfer to a better school, like Harvard. If you are planning on going professional in something other than sports, it makes pretty good sense to get the paper with the Ivy League name on it. Carissimo, Voelkel or McGlynn might be tempted by this.

I don't have any info to back this up. It's just conjecture.

Not true. His AAU buddy Donovan Jack (who was a UVM recruit) is committed to Duquesne. Could be a Sandro/Voelkel type bond. There is some familiarity with him and his friend from AAU

I know that but plenty of his AAU buddies have gone to different schools

And I didn't even read why those three players are leaving Duquesne- because I don't need to, if you can catch what I'm throwing.

Re: Outbound Transfers Catch-All Thread

Where has the idea that Four is looking to go elsewhere come from? Has Four or his family said anything? Does this issue really have legs or is it just conjecture here?

This is just a shared paranoid delusion. Someone reported sitting next to a player's mother who was not frothing-at-the-mouth excited about her son returning to UVM next year. We don't know who's mother it was. We don't know if the son feels the same way. We don't know how drunk the reporter was. We don't really know anything about this.

Hence, we are very, very worried.

I corrected your post.

For the record, I had nothing to drink at or before the game. Were you sitting behind us and privy to the conversation? Just wondering. Maybe you don't know as much as you think you know. Maybe my impressions were wrong, maybe they aren't. Either way, this discussion has been going on in some circles since the non-conference portion of our schedule, that's why I asked the questions I did, when I asked them - to see if things have changed.

Re: Outbound Transfers Catch-All Thread

After the Maine Road game in February where Four only played 17min he tweeted "Guess that's it". His father tweeted back something to the effect of "someday someone will appreciate all the hard work you do" next day Four tweeted something about lifting in the gym and his father tweeted "that's my boy" or something to that effect. This was early February, so not long ago.

Could mean something, could mean absolutely nothing. After that game it seemed like Four played a bit more and started to get more mentions/recognition from UVM Athletics as well as the coaching staff & Becker. Then, things seemed to be going pretty great for Four getting AE ROY and obviously he ended the season real, real strong with play in AE Tournament and NCAA's. Becker lately has been mentioning "Four is our hardest working kid".

I think he generally likes UVM and likes his teammates, coaches, from everything I gather, and maybe the above means nothing, and people's feelings and opinions can change rapidly, especially at 18 or 19 or whatever. I think (hope) he's realistic in that yes he's a highly skilled player, but like all young players he still has stuff to work on to get his game to a higher level.

I do know and I'm certain that not getting a lot of minutes some games was not easy for him this season, despite proving he deserved them- if you think he was fine with it then you probably never played basketball, or played sports. From Day 1 against South Florida he showed how good he was.

If he would be getting similar minutes next season as we have a lot of cooks in the back court kitchen, not starting, etc then I could see that being an issue for him, and honestly would feel the exact same if I were in his shoes.

Hopefully, he "gets" it and realizes how great a career he can have at UVM and in the AE, but he got a lot of pub over the last few weeks of the season and certainly has options.

VT Cats Fan - I didn't mean to say that YOU don't know anything about this. The WE I used applies to me and some others here who weren't at the game and didn't sit next to any player's mother, but who are expressing concern.

OK, fair enough. Your tone seemed a little pejorative.

Re: Outbound Transfers Catch-All Thread

I don't know any specifics- I'm just taking available information I see that's out there, combined with facts, and basically forming some speculation.

I really have no idea if he will transfer, is happy or unhappy, or what. Personally, I *don't think* Four will transfer, I'm just saying I wouldn't be surprised if he were to transfer, and that people shouldn't be so naive to think that it's not a possibility.

I think and hope Four stays at UVM but he also realizes that his role may be similar over the next two seasons with the addition of Rusin and evryone else around for a couple of years.

He may want a bigger role/more minutes and if he were to transfer it would benefit him and make him more appealing with 3 years eligibility.

His goals and "getting it" may be different then UVMHC.

With all that said I think he stays.

If his defense is suspect at the AE level it would even be more suspect at a higher level.

Re: Outbound Transfers Catch-All Thread

i am not very worried about four and nobody else should either. UVM has the most depth at that position. we have plenty of players who can fill in him for in and UVM doesnt have a problem getting recruits. we replaced kopriva and got O'day. we will replace four if he leaves with somebody
