I'd be happy for Wolff as well if he gets the job. I think he's a better coach than his last 3-5 years at BU. Both he and BU needed fresh starts.
It's certainly great for Wolff if it happens, but I wonder how the folks at Holy Cross will feel about the move. You're hiring a coach who, while well-respected in the coaching fraternity, wasn't able to break through and win when it counted. Add to that the fact that Wolff's style of play is "less than exciting" and he's shown a pretty clear lack of interest in building fans and a sense of excitement around his program, and you get a not-so-compelling option.
Willard's HC teams weren't exactly high octane offensive juggernaughts. Defense first and grind it out offense will pretty maintain the status quo for the crusaders. Wolff is a pretty good fit their IMO.
Good news for UNH fans as it sounds like Billy H is not in the mix for the job or at least Holy Cross has not contacted UNH for permission according to today's Seacoast Online.
With an existing Head Coach, Holy Cross isn't going to ask permission until it knows (a) they're making Billy and offer and (b) he's going to accept.
I'm sure there are intermediaries running around to see (a) if Billy's interested, (b) if HC is interested, and (c) what it would take to get him to leave.
HC won't ask permission for a local coach to leave just to interview him, doesn't make them or Billy look good.
And if they're interviewing Tom, they also can ask him "if not you, how about your brother, what's he thinking" and not violate any "permission" rules.
I've heard that there are feelers out between the two parties - just in case.

We can knock Al "Don't Call me Dudley's Dad" Skinner all we want, but between Bill Coen and Ed Cooley and Pat Duquette, he had one heck of a staff at the Heights for a while.

I've never loved and hated a coach more than Al Skinner. The guy is pretty passive in terms of big name recruits but repeatedly turns in quality players through various avenues.
Good grief, though, he is a terrible in-game coach. The team hasn't been able to run an inbounds play in four years, and still can't beat the press.
HC nearing decision
By Jennifer Toland TELEGRAM & GAZETTE STAFF
WORCESTER — Holy Cross will name its new men’s basketball coach this week, and it appears that University of Notre Dame assistant Sean Kearney and University of Pittsburgh assistant Tom Herrion are the frontrunners to succeed Ralph Willard.
According to sources, Kearney will meet with HC director of athletics Dick Regan today.
Sources said Herrion is expected to meet with Regan for a final interview early this week as well.
Herrion did not return a phone message left last night.
Regan said late last week that he expects to announce his new coach on Wednesday. <more...>
I'm going to guess it will be Tom Herrion as the next HC at Holy Cross. But from reading the CrossSports board it sounds like RW is really pushing hard for the Notre Dame Associate HC.
Hey maybe if it is Tom then we can get a 4yr deal to play Holy Cross, that would be fun brother vs brother
I think Tom Herrion would be an excellent hire. The article that was linked a couple of posts ago was commented on by some (obviously disgruntled) HC fan who was upset about the prospect of hiring what he thought of as a re-tread.
An 80-38 record as a head coach is not what I would call a re-tread- it's what I would call a guy being unfairly let go by a school that seems to have an inflated opinion of the stature of their hoops program
Regardless of why Tom Herrion was fired at College of Charleston, Jeff Goodman's reporting that Holy Cross has decided to hire Notre Dame associate head coach Sean Kearney
Thursday, July 2, 2009 Sean Kearney new Holy Cross basketball coach
Kearney will be introduced at a press conference tomorrow morning.
"We had a lot of good candidates that we liked a lot," Holy Cross director of athletics Dick Regan said. "At the end of the day, we felt Sean was the best person to lead the program forward."
I for one am happy for Coach Kearney after all those years of being an Assistant to get a shot at a very good Mid-Major team in Holy Cross. But also am surprised that the job did not goto Tom Herrion. With him growing up right next store, his father being an assistant coach there I thought for sure they would give it to him.
Word on the CrossSports board is that Tom can be a bit abrasive and they talked about his questionable playes he brought into CoC.
No matter what its a team I would like to see UNH begin a 4 game series with.
Word on the CrossSports board is that Tom can be a bit abrasive and they talked about his questionable playes he brought into CoC.
And Ralph Willard was an Altar Boy? Such Holier Than Thou Alumni out at the Worcester Campus of Chestnut Hill Community College.
Tom Herrion did have a rap about being abrasive and bringing in kids to Charleston that the rank and file down there liked, but c'mon... I think he was run out of there for other reasons.
