That's pretty much it in a nutshell. They would be stupid to make any major moves right now.

I assume right now, the musical chairs would just continue with C-USA schools backfilling the Big East. However, if the remaining Big East hoops powers (Catholics) actually split off, they likely raid the A-10. That then has some effect on the CAA and even the AE, but IMO that's still way off.

I would imagine the lower tier (AE/CAA/MAAC/NEC) conferences won't make any moves until they know what's happening with the Big East/A-10.
If UCONN and Louisville leave, I think it could be over (the partnership between non-football and football). We know Boise, SDSU and probably Navy would not join so it could be something like the below UMASS is an easy vote because they hate the MAC and would be happy to join a hybrid league with PC, Villanova, etc. If I'm a basketball school, I'm willing to stick with that group, but only if they bring in UMASS.

It's also not apparent that the hoops only schools actually have the ability to raid the A10 anymore, which is really incredible.

Re: Conference Expansion: Explosion Coming?

So Rutgers announces this afternoon.........and now it looks like Boise State, San Diego State, and BYU could be head back to the Mountain West:

http://espn.go.com/college-football/...rn-sources-say

Can someone please put Big East Football out of their misery so that we can all move forward!?!?

So I have some new theories after reading through many articles and opinions..........here is my FINAL (ha!) take on the way things will pan out:

Big Ten: + UNC & Virginia
SEC: + Virginia Tech & NC State
Big 12: + FSU, Clemson, GA Tech, Miami, Houston & SMU
PAC-12: No additions

Future ACC:

BC
UConn
Syracuse
Temple
Duke
Wake Forest

Pitt
Cincinnati
Louisville
Memphis
Central Florida
South Florida

+ Hoops only

St. Johns
Villanova
Georgetown
Notre Dame

This will be a very uncomfortable marriage of academics (BC, Duke, etc) and athletics (Cincinnati, Louisville, Memphis, etc).........but they really have no choice. I think that they also get the best of Big East hoops because it will make sense for those 4 schools ($$$, rivals, and prestige wise).

Mountain West: adds Boise State, San Diego State & BYU

A-10: adds Providence, Seton Hall, DePaul and Marquette

Big East implodes..........

Re: Conference Expansion: Explosion Coming?

Two bouts of wishful thinking...

1) Anybody else wish that the NCAA would cede control of college football, and only college football, so that those schools could go create a muddled cat's cradle of football-only conferences, and stop f***ing around with the natural geographic and philosophical conference alignments of *every other sport, ever*?

2) At what point do 75% of the schools involved in this process realize that this draw toward 14/15/16-team conferences might make you plenty of money, but leaves you with completely mediocre athletic programs? You can save money on trophy cases, because when you already can't compete in a 12-team league, you sure as hell can't compete in a 16-team league.

Re: Conference Expansion: Explosion Coming?

I'm interested to see conference realignment in 15-20 years, as the numbers of kids becoming football players declines as parents keep their children out of the sport, because the trauma from head injuries and health risks is simply too much.

I'm doubtful that will happen. People love football

I'm shocked that nobody has come up with the idea of making Football more of a stand-alone sport (like Hockey -- though I'm not at all familiar with the details of hockey).

Regarding your second point, it is probably why even the 16-team super-conferences will eventually break apart. Indiana hasn't been competitive in the Big Ten since forever, ditto Iowa State in the Big XII. Those schools each get a share of the TV money for the conference -- at some point the schools that really produce that money are going to have a gripe about what their "fair" share is.

Re: Conference Expansion: Explosion Coming?

this is really sad. Anyone else thinks the Big East going down really sucks. I actually liked the Big East... Television Contracts is killing Division I-A college football.

Hockey was/is "stand-alone" only because fewer than 60 schools, many not full time D-I members, play the sport at the D-I level. Only the Ivy League had enough members to reach the critical 6 without affiliates until this season, and they're frequently rumored to split from ECAC Hockey. B1G just hit the magic number this season and will form their own conference next season. While hockey will never directly mirror hoops due to geography and multi-division institutions, as conferences hit a certain point of stability or relative power and combine it with a certain mass of sponsoring members or a willingness to accept affiliates, more all sports conferences will branch into hockey.

The reason the schools won't split football conference affiliation from other sports affiliations is that it provides the highest penetration for the marketing of their conferences brand, elevating the stature of other sports; its TV contract can be bundled with other sports, netting higher returns and more guaranteed broadcasts for hoops or even less popular sports; and, the other sports provide additional content for their own in house networks.
