Yeah, I've driven by Louisville's football stadium- it's quite impressive. Big support for everything Louisville Cardinals in that town.

Jeez, and Deadspin is reporting that Grand Canyon University- a for profit institution that has been sued by the US government and admits students without reviewing transcripts- is joining the WAC.

IMO the big reason UConn was passed up for the ACC this go around (although they remain the next best addition right now) is this simple fact:

UConn sold 1,500 tickets to the Fiesta Bowl apperance
Louisville sold 15k to their Organge Bowl apperance

Look at home attendance numbers for both schools in hoops and football as well. I think L'ville does better.

I think it came down to the perception that UConn just doesn't have the football "culture" or support that L'ville has, period.

success and talent favors Uconn over Rutgers, and Louisville but sadly Conference don't care about Success/talent... All they care about is tickets and Marketshare

Uconn has to push for AAU admittance (by the way Boston University was recently invited to the AAU) and then try to get in B1G in the next couple of years. I feel like the ACC is not too stable either so B1G would be a great outcome for Uconn.

Big Ten just invited Maryland and Rutgers- why wouldn't they want to UConn? You get the northeast TV market, you get the basketball program, and they now offer D1 A football.

Isn't the Big Ten targeting Strong athletic schools that are also AAU (Association of American Universities)? That's why Maryland and Rutgers made the cut.

Nebraska was stripped of aau membership a few years ago. The big ten seemed okay with that.

AAU membership for entrance to the Big Ten is a red herring. Nebraska was booted from the AAU just before the became a member of the conference -- didn't change anything. Notre Dame has an open invitation, despite not being a member of the AAU.

UConn is just not BigTen material. I think they may evenutally get the ACC call if there are further shakeups.

Wisconsin, as a state, is pretty comparable to Connecticut in many ways (population, economy, quality of life, etc), right?

Now ask yourself if UConn is comparable to the UW-Madison. Not even close. Sorry, but the Huskies just don't own the state like the Badgers or even the Hawkeyes do. These Midwest flagships are embeded with alumni and causal fans. UConn doesn't have that market penatration at home. Most of the UConn non-alumni fans are casual fans - it is not a state religon like it is in the Big Ten.

UConn does not have the rabid BigTen fanbase needed and the Hartford/New Haven TV market is just not enough for the BTN to really get excited about. UConn in the BigTen would be just another mouth to feed. At least SUNJ and Maryland brought millions of cable subscribers so the BTN is now a "must cary" in those states - making a nice payday.

incorrect. Nebraska was kicked out of the AAU (Kicked out in 2011) after becoming members of the B1G (joined in 2010). If they would've gotten kicked out before they probably wouldn't be part of the B1G today. I read a few ESPN articles about it. UConn won't be part of the Big Ten for as long as they are not AAU unless the B1G changes its ways.

What explains Rutgers being chosen over UConn when Rutgers and Uconn both have similar fan bases?

Are you suggesting this is true for Rutgers and Marylan which both got the invite?

Uconn dominates the Connecticut Market in College sports. No other schools comes even close to it. They have a massive TV package for the Women's BB/Men's BB, and Football with SNY. Nothing in the area comes close to Uconn's market share

You basically have to have something to hang your hat on...........AAU, HUGE market, terrific facilities, rabid fan base, super success in football, rich tradition.......unfortunately for UConn, they don't quite have any of that (even if most of us would KILL for an athletic program like that).

I never thought I'd be sticking up for UConn, but UConn has easily the best combination of men's and women's basketball in the entire country. 3 National Championships for Men's and 7 for Women's. Plus their market/deal w/ SNY is attractive.

If they were added to the Big Ten, they would have the second most National Championships behind Indiana.

Now- if the Big Ten requires AAU membership or really wants an established football team rather than emerging, then that's a different story- but UConn has everything else. They had 8,000 fans in Gampel for a November Tuesday game against UVM. BC is in the ACC and draws less than Patrick Gym for most of their ACC games.
