The basketball schools just got too greedy by hitching their horses to the GOLDEN football. They knew that this stuff was coming for a few years now...........they need to cut the umbilical cord NOW. There is no reason why the Big East can't continue to be an AWESOME hoops + Olympic sports league. No, the BIG money won't be there.......but they will still get some pretty good revenue based on the size of their markets and program visibility. But time is running out. If the sh*t hits the fan in the ACC........they might swoop in and steal St. John's, G-town, and Nova and then it's game over for the remaining members with the A-10 taking the bets of the leftovers (who woulda thunk THAT a few years ago!)

The A-10 is sitting pretty......for now. As long as football continues to rule the Big East, the A-10 is safe........and might be on the verge of flourishing. If I were DePaul and Marquette, I'd have the A-10 on speed dial.......that is their next best option IMO.

But how big does the A-10 want to get? I'm trying to remember what their membership is going to be after this year and I think this is right:

Butler
Dayton
Duquesne
Fordham
GW
LaSalle
UMass
Rhode Island
Richmond
St. Bonaventure
St. Joe's
St. Louis
VCU
Xavier

They lose Temple & Charlotte...so if I'm not missing anything, they will be at 14. I could see them going to 16 with DePaul/Marquette...heck, that would really make divisions perfect:

Butler
Dayton
DePaul
Duguesne
Marquette
St. Bonaventure
St. Louis
Xavier

Fordham
GW
LaSalle
UMass
Rhode Island
Richmond
St. Joe's

Yeah, I think that 16 is the limit.........and DePaul and Marquette would fit in perfectly for a divisional set-up and deliver the Chicago and Milwaukee markets.

On a side note, if UMass doesn't find a new football home (with some natural rivals (UConn, Temple, BC, etc) after this is all said and done..........I don't see how an FBS program is sustainable for them.

I meant to mention them...yeah, they are in a pretty precarious situation right now as well. In reality, what football league could they possibly go to? They don't bring much of anything to the table at the FBS level...in a few years, it could look like they wasted a huge chunk of money to upgrade just to have to drop back down.

Lastly, I know all this shuffling of conferences is crazy, hard to track and just flat out ridiculous, but I can't help but find it fascinating. It's kind of like a train wreck...you know it's horrible but you just can't take your eyes off it.

That's what I'm getting at....Indiana, Ohio State, Wisco, Michigan and Michigan State are all marquee names...but how long will it take to develop a rivalry like Maryland fans felt for Duke/UNC....years.

*Maybe* Maryland can develop a rivalry with Indiana since they played each other in National Championship game back in 2001 w/ Juan Dixon & Jared Jeffries...maybe. Geographically there's just so little in common for Maryland in Big Ten..maybe some of the kids know people at Michigan, maybe Wisco....but all the people they probably know that went to Duke, UNC, Virginia, Virginia Tech, BC, etc.

It's funny- reading across the web, most Maryland fans are PISSED about this move..anecdotally have read so many posts of alums stating they are no longer donating......and reading Big Ten fans response to adding Maryland and Rutgers...PISSED. Especially Rutgers lol....nobody wants Rutgers.

Silly fans, they actually think their opinion matters/ the sports programs are for them and it's not just about $

I say no freakin way to this scenario. You think DePaul and Marquette are going to leave Georgetown, Nova, St. John's to be in a league with Bonaventure, Duquesne, LaSalle, GW, Fordham?

The basketball schools are only 7, but to me they are still more powerful than the A10 because there's essentially no weak link. Every single school plays in a facility >8000 and has decent attendance and they are all in cities and all pretty good schools. You think they are going to break up to play in high school gymnasiums? The A10 has a number of powerful programs, but they also have a ton of dead weight (I'm not insulting those schools, but that is how a program like Marquette will view the likes mentioned above). BU fits in with the above mentioned group more than Marquette does. The fact is Xavier, Butler, Dayton, St. Louis, Richmond belong with the 7 BE hoops schools MUCH MORE than Marquette belongs with GW, Fordham, and company. Those schools barely invest in basketball and if not for their conference affiliation would barely be better than America East schools if you face the facts.

Only way that happens is if the ACC starts adding hoops schools (Nova, GT or Johnnies) and that is not happening.

What is it about UCONN that pissed so many former BE members off? First BC, then Syracuse.

Makes sense........gets the B1G down in SEC recruiting country.......HUGE market with Atlanta.........great move on both of their parts. The ACC does nothing for Georgia Tech.......I can seem them being a good fit if they don't mind the travel.
