And who would those "peers" be? Maryland and Rutgers? Delaware and JMU?

The current set up we have its fine. I wouldn't mind just sticking with the eight member schools. Delaware would be nice though

Maryland and rutgers? impossible

Re: Conference Expansion: Explosion Coming?

Have you guys seen what is happening to the WAC? They have invited Utah Valley St and Chicago St from the Great West, to go along with new D-I's Seattle U, Bakersfield and Grand Canyon U.

Their lineup will look like this next year:
Cal-Bakersfield
Chicago St.
Grand Canyon
Idaho
New Mexico St.
Seattle
Utah Valley St.

Wow. They may as well pull the plug. The WAC used to be a great conference.

That conference will ranked lower than the AE

MAAC Presidents have their next meeting on December 14th. Some media reporting that expansion is on the agenda.

"The basketball schools are not thrilled with Tulane and what they will do to the league's RPI," said a league source from a football-playing member. "They were not all that excited with that addition."

The source added that "the basketball schools would have fallen off the ledge if we would have added East Carolina as a full member and what that would have done to the basketball league."
Well, duh.

Asbury Park Press:
Quote:
“The MAAC membership is meeting Friday and membership is on the agenda,'' MAAC commissioner Richard Ensor said.
Ensor, a Lacey resident, declined to identify possible future members but sources say Monmouth, Quinnipiac, and Wagner — all current members of the Northeast Conference — are in the mix.
The MAAC apparently plans to fill at least one vacancy created by the departure of Loyola, Md. to the Patriot League in 2013-14.
In men's and women's basketball once Loyola leaves the MAAC, pending expansion or any other defections, would consist of former NEC schools Rider and Marist, as well as as Fairfield, St. Peter’s, Iona, Canisius, Manhattan, Siena, and Niagara.
“It’s unclear to me at this point whether we’re expanding by one, two or three.” Ensor said.
He said any future members could begin conference play as early as next season.
“We’ve had past strategic planning efforts that have been on going for the last 18 months which have indicated we would go to 12 schools even before Loyola announced they were resigning in August,” Ensor said. “That could occur but it could possibly be that we go with one or two.”
Ensor said basketball is of paramount importance to the MAAC.
“The investment by a number of schools in the region in their facilities and in their programs is certainly being taking into account by the MAAC as it reviews possible expansion,'' he said.

Re: Conference Expansion: Explosion Coming?

When things like this happen, I like checking the A-10's long running expansion thread on this board: http://www.basketballforum.com/atlan...alignment.html

They're the ones in the most danger of getting pulled apart first if the Big East dissolution happens. My biggest takeaway is that there seems to be a widespread overvaluation of Dayton's market power and the differentiation made between the Cincy & Dayton markets.

Not sure if it's true or not, but anyone else find it very strange that it's the first time the "Catholic 7" have met to address these concerns?

Seems like something they should have raised their hands on for a while now.

My guess is it could be the first time they have all met together, in person and with the commissioner regarding this issue. I have no doubts there have been phone calls, emails, texts, skyping, fedex letters, etc exchanged throughout this mass exodus of schools from the Big East.

Still, seems really, really late.

Re: Conference Expansion: Explosion Coming?

As has been mentioned, I'm sure they were willing to allow quite a bit of leeway given the potential TV revenue that could be split, esp if you still had Louisville, UConn, Cincy and were adding Memphis. However, now that you take away Louisville, add Tulane along with the other misfits to the league and the obvious desires of both Cincy & UConn to get the hell out of Dodge, it's really gotten to the point where it may make more sense to them to break apart than keep adding ridiculous schools with zero hoops history/ability.

This is also a new commish that I don't think has been around long. I would tend to believe that all schools have talked amongst each other on multiple occasions but it's now really coming to a head.

Katie bar the door if this does happen because there will be massive chaos across this country with conference affiliations.
