Re: OBW Catch-All Thread

Tyler Morris hit the shot of the year for any AE alum - it took a hell of a lot of perseverance to make it onto the court for it: http://www.onebidwonders.com/2011/06/01/morris-for-3/

Thoughts on Chambers departure... plus an interesting role Joe Paterno played in the whole deal at Penn State: http://www.onebidwonders.com/2011/06...seasons-at-bu/

Re: OBW Catch-All Thread

Chris Markwood's departure from Maine was not strictly a financial decision and the Retrievers are far from broken up over Nate Stewart leaving UMBC: http://www.onebidwonders.com/2011/06...-coaching-gig/

FYI, here is our tentative schedule for non-conference play. If there are any games left off the list that you'd like live coverage/commentary for, let us know and we'll consider it.

Nice to someone is trekking the gauntlet up 89 to see UVM.

Now you guys will know what you're talking about as it relates to UVM this season

I would say we don't deserve that but we left Voelkel off Preseason All-Rookie last year, so I'll shut my mouth. For once.

At least we weren't too proud to deny him his threeve OBW Rookie of the Week awards. That and $1.70 will get you T fare.

In all seriousness, though, the pre-season content train should get rolling soon.

Ugh, our only game you'll see is against St John's and their 11 walk-on players and coach going through chemo that'll still kick our ass.

I wasn't even thinking about Voelkel- it's pretty difficult to predict all-rookie teams, wouldn't hold anyone accountable for that- though Voelkel was highly rated- I was thinking more along the lines of Far's comments that Maine had far more talent than Vermont but just weren't properly coached...and you seemed to be pretty adamant that Fjeld shouldn't have gotten 1st team...which surprised me because... he got 1st team and.. was an obvious choice.

My mind is like a bear trap Air Holland- if something goes in it doesn't come out!

But enough about old stuff, glad to see you guys making it to a bunch of games- I wish I could do the same.

You'd be surprised how many AE coaches shared our sentiment (and still feel that way) about Maine vs UVM (and the rest of the league last year)... and we're talking solid AE coaches, not basement dwellers... #Imjustsayin

Well that's probably why they're still coaching in the AE

Re: OBW Catch-All Thread

We may find out pretty soon if coaching was the x-factor for UVM last year. This is a big step for Becker and returning four out of five starters the expectations will be pretty high for him. Unlike when Lonergan took over and had almost nothing returning. I hope he can keep us competitive and in the hunt but I would not be surprised if we finish 4th or 5th in the conference this year. Joey and Garrett played very important roles last season even though they were not starters. Evan was lights out in the OOC schedule which changed the way teams defended him during conference play. That opened things up for Bald, Voelkel, and Glass. We don't have a go to guy in the post this season which will make it much more difficult on the perimeter. I'm hoping that Crenca, Bergmann, and Apfeld are ready to play because we will need them. In my opinion Albany, Stonybrook, and Boston all have more talented and experienced rosters. If Ferg and Alvin are healthy New Hampshire could be a tough match up for us as well. I projected UVM in fourth place this summer in our preseason poll and still think that's a realistic place for them to be.

IIRC I was adamant that Fjeld wasn't on -my- first team. When Fjeld actually ended up on the 1st team I didn't freak out. Generally speaking my approach to post-season honors (or pre-season honors) is that I try to identify the pool of players that have a reasonable case for each award, and then accept that opinions will vary. That doesn't necessarily mean I agree, but if I can understand the reasoning then I don't have a problem with it.

To be honest, Partin's selection prompted much more head-scratching from me than Fjeld's ever did.

And in re: getting to games, the hardest part this year (for me) is going to be that I don't have a car anymore, because I moved closer to work and no longer need one. But there's always a work-around I wish I had more opportunities to attend weeknight games, though - if we could, we could make a serious run at the 100-game exemption for NCAA credentials. That's out of reach this year, though. Maybe in the future.

I thought Partin was a good selection as well. He killed it for BU last season IMO and was the "X-Factor" they needed. Whenever Holland was off, Partin put the team on his back numerous times with his shooting/scoring throughout the season.

I'm very interested to see how Partin does this season as the go-to scorer for BU. One, teams will know his game much more. Most importantly, He will face defensive pressure quite differently then he did last season, and will have the opposing team's best defender on him for the most part. That didn't happen last season- as he had countless uncontested scoring opportunities and a weaker defender as Holland was the primary guy to stop.

If he delivers like he did last season, it will be more impressive.

Agreed! Without O'Brien, Partin is obviously the key to BU this year. However, to your point, they need another scorer (Morris?) or Partin will see the type of attention Holland consistently did last year. Can he handle being #1 option? If he can, then maybe he is POY in the conference. Jury is still out right now.....Albany's guards will help each other with scoring opportunities, as Black can create shots for Logan A., and for SB, the addition of Bracey, along with Hayes' ability to shoot from deep, probably make Dougher more like his Soph. year, and not like his Jr. year.....
