This is excellent in-depth coverage & writing.

Seriously, more of this (reporting) and less of the op/ed fanboy stuff.

Re: OBW Catch-All Thread

great work ffts

just a couple things though. I think Voelkel can jump and run. He is not quick but he has pretty good speed in the open floor after snagging a rebound. He cant drive but he can run. I also think he jumps very well for rebounds. He will get up for some rebounds. He just doesnt jump well with the ball in his hands.

Another thing is I don't see why you call UVM and its players not flashy, boring all the time. It's the AE. You could use those words for 90% of the players and teams in the AE yet you always seem to just use them with UVM. I'm not just talking about the articles you just wrote but the ones from the end of last year and through the summer. Can you explain to us why UVM is the only boring and not flashy team in the AE? It really seems like your knocking UVM when you use those words just on UVM. How come you never use those words for SB, UNH, UA, or any other team in the AE?

Maybe it's a compliment.

UVM is very structured (compliment) efficient (compliment) and workmanlike (compliment) which winds up being a WINNING formula.

I like how you say it much more. IF exciting plays you mean uptempo, lots of dunks, lots of points, and lots of fancy plays very few teams and players meet this criteria. I think its rediculous that UVM is the only team that has its players and itself labeled as boring and not flashy.

This year we will see some behind the back passes from Voelkel and more dunks. I think O'day, Rusin, Rugg, and Apfeld will put some down.

UVM has been spoiled for a bit having Marqus in town. You dont get much more of an exciting player than him.

Re: OBW Catch-All Thread

Four McGlynn was one of the most exciting players for me to watch last season, but I don't think he dunked once. Voelkel is also one of the most exciting, just because he's such a unique player.

Re: OBW Catch-All Thread

I'm really confused by some of the conclusions people are reaching. Here's what we wrote about Voelkel:
Brian Voelkel, Vermont, Jr., F, 6’6” 230
2011-12 stats: 4.6 PPG, 8.6 RPG, 5.1 APG, 1.7 SPG, 2.6 A/TO
He can’t shoot, run, jump, or move in any sort of agile or speedy manner, but Voelkel does literally everything else on the floor and has literally dominated games without scoring a point. A point/power forward, Voelkel owns the glass and has an insanely high basketball IQ. He is in all likelihood both the best passer and the best rebounder in the conference, which is a truly rare combination. Voelkel possesses every single intangible a player can have in basketball, and is what makes the Catamounts go. The quarterback on offense and defense, he’s gritty, physical, tough, and plays tremendously hard every night. He is a tremendous help-side defender who makes up for physical limitations with tremendous anticipation.

That's pretty damn complimentary. The lead in is obviously a bit of hyperbole: You have to be able to run and jump, physically, to play basketball at the Division I level if you are 6'5". But, is Voelkel one of the more explosive athletes even in the un-explosive America East? No, he's not. I think it was quite the accurate description of Voelkel: A tremendously unique player whose intangibles, instincts, and toughness are off the charts, to make of for relatively pedestrian athleticism (compared to his opponents). I'm a firm believer that most rebounders either do their rebounding above the rim (getting higher than opponents) or in the trenches (positioning). Voelkel has great anticipation and is wonderful at boxing out, securing positioning, and space. He rebounds below the rim. I said very similar things (regarding lack of athleticism) about Darryl Proctor several years ago. I don't think either is particularly athletic as far as the use of the word in the basketball lexicon, but they get the job done and dominant.

Re: OBW Catch-All Thread

Here's what we said about Sandro:
Sandro Carissimo, Vermont, Jr., 6’2” 170
2011-12 stats: 7.1 PPG, 2.9 RPG, 2.4 APG
Carissimo is the epitome of the Catamounts, whose sum is greater than their individual parts. Carissimo isn’t flashy and won’t put up eye-popping stats or jaw-dropping highlights, but he flat out wins. A true floor general, Carissimo is calm, cool and collected, runs the Catamounts’ offense to perfection, and rarely makes a mistake. Carissimo seems to always be in the right place at the right time, and has a knack for making the big play at the game’s biggest moments.

We didn't say the Catamounts were boring at all. We said that CARISSIMO isn't flashy (flashy in the bball lexicon usually means a point guard like D.J. Irving or Maurice Watson, for example, who pull off And1-esq drives and crossovers, etc)., or play in an explosive manner. Carissimo's stats also - if you look at them, even in games where he took over - never jump off the page, but he is a much better/more important player than his stats would indicate.

I wish people would really genuinely read what was written instead of jumping to conclusions based off of their perceptions of what we think.

Re: OBW Catch-All Thread

With that said, this is as good a time as any to announce that Matt and myself are implementing a policy where we will no longer be debating what we write on message boards openly from here on out.

We put a lot of work into the site, and we think it should be able to stand alone on it's own merits without need for rebuttal from us. People will think what they want to think no matter what the content (I.E., calling an article that features direct quotes from possibly the most explosive dunker in Vermont history, and the winningest coach in Vermont history as supporting evidence "fan boy" writing). And it's become too much of a drain and a waste of time to continually defend the site and the work.

Enjoy it if you would like, hate it if you would rather, that is fine. We'll still be hitting the AE roads all season long and providing write ups and features. We strongly encourage everyone to check the site frequently and often, as we are going to probably move away from posting links in here for every article (It feels like begging for readership, and we need to figure out if people are genuinely compelled/interested in visiting the site on their own to help us figure out if we can come up with a sustainable business model for the site and if it is worth continuing after this year).

I also encourage everyone to email us frequently on articles, features, complaints, suggestions. We're going to be using the OBW email address regularly now. We're also hoping to start a weekly podcast that would include a Q & A section from our readers every week.

Lastly, We will still be active on here from time to time, especially when we reach decisions on the direction of the site, or want to update you all on any new directions, etc., the site might be going in. But, we definitely need to move away from continuing to defended the work.

Haters gonna hate, as the saying goes, and we definitely need the haters just as much as everyone else to keep us on the straight and narrow.

Peace Homies.

FFTS

I guess you missed this part because I was mainly refering to the other articles you have written from last year and the summer when you always had to include UVM being boring and not flashy. Maybe it's you who needs to read what people write. You never write the same thing about other people/teams in the AE. You know how many times you have said this......... A LOT.

You totally avoid mentioning how or why you don't refer to anyone else in this manner. You try to play it off by bringing up the one article that has one line about sandro not being flashy. Did you mention any other player not being flashy? Is Sandro the least flashiest player in the league? He has some great sneaky layups, some would call flashy, at the end of games and shot clocks. As somebody who pays attention to what's said about UVM it's obvious you always putting some kind of knock on them instead of just giving them praise for being the star of the league over the past 10 seasons.

I really believe your still upset about UVM beating BU in the early 2000's when that was the last time you had a favorite team and is probably your favorite team in the AE off all time.

Why Can't We Get Players Like That??? Maine cast-off Murphy Burnatowski is lighting it up for Colgate against some high-major competition. http://www.onebidwonders.com/2012/11...up-at-colgate/

Maine has the player talent right now to be a powerhouse. It's just going to waste.

And our AD is never going to do anything about it. You're welcome.
