Re: 2013 America East Recruiting Thread
Congratulations to the UVM basketball coaches for adding a new Catamount and to Kurt for joining a respectable D1 program. The NERR mentioned that Kurt had offers from the Ivy, CAA, and Patriot League. Does any know who else offered him? It appears he's a late bloomer similar to O'Day. That is often the perfect get for a school of our stature.
Now that we add a versatile player that can play three positions on the floor, what type of player do we go after for our final scholarship? I would think we would need to focus on a point guard since next year will be Sandro's last. |

I'm feeling optimistic about the Catamounts' future and maybe even about my chances of getting my daughter at UVM to meet me at Patrick this year. We'll see about that, but go Cats! Looking forward to some BB. (Does anyone know when the green and gold scrimmage is?) |

In terms of going after a specific position at this point, I don't think it's a need and I just want to see them get the best player possible regardless of position. The reason being is we're going to have a 6-man class in 2014 and can grab one then. As far as top targets available IMO that I like, I'll rank them: 1) Anders Broman 2) Chris Braley 3) Skyler White (he might be going back to West Coast though b/c he's from Seattle) 4) Adrian Oliveira 5) Tavon Blackmon/Kasim Chandler/Devon Thomas 6) Sam Donahue

Re: 2013 America East Recruiting Thread
Also saw UVM was on the list on ESPN for 6'9'' Mohamed Bah from Lee Academy in Maine. Looks like Gonzaga, St. Bonaventure, Lehigh, and Towson are involved as well. Plays AAU for NE Playaz, same as Adrian Oliveira. Seems to be a sleeper, not sure why someone his size does not have more going on. Originally from Mali. No idea how he'd ever wind up playing in the AE/PL. Big guy, dunks everything:

Re: 2013 America East Recruiting Thread
Does Steidl play at Ridgefield High School? That is one of the neighboring towns to mine. Maybe I can get a chance to see him play against our town.

Re: 2013 America East Recruiting Thread
Per BFP John Fantino Steidl chose UVM from Northeastern, Dartmouth, and Brown. Looks like academics were a priority no matter where Steidl went.
Also, Steidl is young for his grade- only 16.

Re: 2013 America East Recruiting Thread
Coach O'Brien was checking out Worcester Academy the other day. Wonder who he was in to see? Their big dogs are 2013 Rene Castro, Darryl Reynolds, and 2014 Matt Cimino.

Castro and Cimino won't be going to the AE I can tell you that much. Maybe I'll eat crow on that, but they are both at worst A10 level from what I saw last year. Reynolds, yes...but also Matt Mobley and Tom Rivard. They are two I could see us going after. Rivard seems like the "typical" UVM recruit.

Castro has a bunch of A10 interest. GW, UMass, Butler just offered. Reynolds and Cimino are BCS recruits. UVM was most likely checking out Rivard, Mobley, and/or the new SG from Florida Matt Panaggio maybe, or maybe some 2014 guys...I like Rivard quite a bit. If we added him we'd have wing players for days.

Re: 2013 America East Recruiting Thread
UVM already has steidl, taggart, and kilpatrick in a two year window. I'm guessing Taggart will be a career back up. Some people think this is a negative thing but look at a player like Elbaum. Completely happy with a bench role. He still sees plenty of minutes. He is still a big part of the team. I think having players like Elbaum are huge. You need guys who are willing to work hard if they see minutes or not. Its really nice to have a back up pg like elbaum off then bench. Taggart could be the same kind of player.
It might be tough getting another wing player in 2013. Whoever it is will have to compete with steidl and kilpatrick for playing time. I think Steidl is a SF. He could guard slower two's and smaller 4's but SF in his postion. Since we have only one scholly I think we are out of the running for the soukup twins. I'm guessing they are sticking together. I still would like Braley or Broman even though we have a lot of young wing players. Braley and Broman may or may not beat out kilpatrick for the future starting SG spot. Kilpatrick will have a year on them. I wouldnt mind getting 1 of the PG's in 2013 to be our back up pg of the future. I'm really hoping we get Spellman in 2014. IF we dont get a pg in 2013 we will end up with zero Pg's on the roster the year after. That could mean two Freshmen Pg's running the team. I could see that as a problem. Its hard to imagine that a direction we would want to go. maybe we could pull a 1 year Pg like trey blue with 1 of our 6 schollies in 2014. That would help balance things out and give us a veteran PG that season. I think that would prolly be the best way to go. Get a primetime PG 2014 4 year starter and have a 5th senior teaching him the ropes as a backup for that season. |

Re: 2013 America East Recruiting Thread
I've seen everything on Kilpatrick,Steidl, and Taggert and i don't see a lot of difference in "athletic" ability.....the one thing i have seen is that Harrison Taggert was the MVP of the GYM RAT CHALLENGE and that is pretty impressive... I would take a guess that if you saw footage of Brian Voekel or Tommy Brenton as a junior in high school they would have been tagged as "not that athletic", so do not judge a book by it's youtube cover...hopefully they all work out, that would be ideal, but to already label Taggert as a four year back-up and KIlpatrick/Stiedl as"shoe-ins" is a little premature at best. Listen, we are both on the same team I just happen to think think, and i could be wrong ,that Harrison will be a strong player! I like to think that especially in the last 4 or 5 years that the staff knows what they are doing......and there is a reason they got him to re-classify and commit! P.S Elbaum will just get better and better...the guy can play D.. run an offense and post up mis-matches...and look him up on youtube...nasty 360 dunk!

Re: 2013 America East Recruiting Thread
I agree that its not set in stone. But being a four year back up is not exactly a bad thing. A player like Elbaum is great to have and he still plays quality minutes and has an impact on the team. A lot of times with college kids they get what they put into it. There is so much room for improvement that any kid could win the starting job. Harrison Taggart though was only offered after they said "IF we offer you a scholly will you try to reclassify?" They could of offered him and just said we would like you to reclassify. I'm not sure they offer him if he doesnt reclassify. That might not have to do with him being good enough as much as them wanting more out of the only 2 schollies they had for 2013. Taggart also didnt have many other offers if any at that point. All these things point to UVM being higher on Steidl and Kilpatrick. I trust UVM's judgement on who they think is better right now. I'm not knocking Harrison at all. He will have a year on Steidl. He could be a starter some day. He could be 1 injury away from starting. Just because there are better players starting over you does not make you a bad player. Elbaum is a perfect example.
I also think that kilpatrick is a level above Steidl and Taggart in athleticism. He was put on the same boat as O'day and Rusin as our most atheletic players right now. Kilpatrick has some hops from what i've heard. \ |

Offers were from Northeastern, Sacred Heart, Colgate, UNH, Brown, Dartmouth, and Columbia. I'm not sure he's a late bloomer, but he could possibly have a good upside. He is very athletic, has a great handle for a SF, rebounds well considering how skinny he is, and is a very good stationary shooter. However at present he doesn't have a good jump shot off the dribble and doesn't hold the ball high enough when shooting in the lane. If he improves on the two points in the last sentence and adds a fair amount of weight/strength, he could be a good AE player. Also - like many HS players - he needs to improve his M2M defense. His HS team plays 100% zone (often a 1-3-1 with him on top), so he won't get much chance to work on his M2M over the winter. |

The only PL team he had an offer from was Colgate. The three Ivy's were Dartmouth, Brown, and Columbia - not Yale. |
