On the Rugg thing, that's a valid question and my thoughts on giving either Rugg (or Angstadt) a scholarship is they have to earn it first-which neither have. Neither kid was invited on the team and told they would get a scholarship if one opened up- but rather if they earned it. I know both could have gotten D2 scholarships but they wanted the challenge of D1. I still don't believe Rugg will see significant minutes this season, but if he does- I'll be rooting for him.

By earning it ultimately it come's down to Becker and staff's discretion- but if it was up to me I think you have to become a key contributor and play more than a reserve role and get at least 20-25 minutes or become a starter- that's how I would justify it. Kinda like Jimmy Gray at Binghamton- he really stepped up, proved he belonged, and earned a scholarship. I think both Rugg and Angstadt are, at least right now, a long ways away from that level.
We talked about Santo earlier in the summer in regard to his transition to college basketball. As someone who watched him play during his high school career, I am sticking with my opinion that he will eventually be a contributor at Vermont. However, as I mentioned, not only does he have to deal with the normal transition from high school to D1, he also has to deal with a change in position. Fortunately for UVM fans, he has someone ahead of him that is a proven player, so Chris can ease into his role. As I see it, he gets spot minutes this year, with increasing minutes next year, and by his Jr. year, possibly some at the 2-guard spot, and a starter his Sr. year. He will never be a cancer in the locker room, and will push the starters in practice with his work ethic and positive attitude. IMO, he certainly has more upside potential than Rugg, and will be able to step in by next year as a starter should an injury occur.

Re: 2013 America East Recruiting Thread

I thought Santo played pretty well against St. Mikes, better than in the intrasquad scrimmage. He's learning a whole new system - that takes time. I never thought he was going to be a freshman starter, but so what? He plays really hard and was all over his man on defense. Time will tell, but not much time has passed yet.

Rugg is already a contributor. Not too many years ago he would have been a UVM starter, but the program has improved. If he was a UMBC player he'd get a lot more game time and probably average 8 points and 4 rebounds. He wants to play at UVM and I'm happy about that.

I haven't seen much of Angstadt. Is he coming off an injury?

yup.

Angstadt suffered an ACL tear in his right knee July 5 [2010] during a summer tournament. He had surgery and will need nearly a full year to recover, meaning he won't play for the Blue Jays during his senior season.

Re: 2013 America East Recruiting Thread

I don't know how a thread about the 2013 recruiting class became a thread about whether Clancy Rugg should get a scholarship (oh wait, I know how...we're insane), but think about what it takes for a walk-on to earn a scholarship: I don't remember when Chad Powlovich actually got his scholly (before his SR year I think), but his JR/SR years he played in every game but 1...and he averaged double-digit minutes as a JR. And even then, a scholarship had to be open and available for him to take. There are so many variables to this that it's barely worth discussing. It's a far larger conversation than "I like the kid, he plays hard". Of course he plays hard, he's a walk-on. Walk-ons play hard, or they go home.

I'm not dumping on Clancy at all...I like the kid, he plays hard...but he hasn't done anything to even start this scholarship discussion, let alone finish it.

RE: Rugg

Rugg is from Burlington and played at BHS, so naturally more people are going to think he should get a scholarship. If he was from West Rutland nobody would even mention it.

That's all that's going on with that.

Re: 2013 America East Recruiting Thread

we are just going to have a problem getting santo playing time. A lot of people think he will beat out Rugg. Maybe? It certainly causes less of a problem. IF Rugg plays more minutes than santo in the next two years shouldnt Rugg get a scholly. I have a hard time thinking Santo could play the two. I would see him as an undersized four first. i really like rugg's defense. He did a good job on holland last year for a freshmen. his length is very nice at the 3.

the fact that i mentioned santo leaving is only because he is the most replaceable player we have right now IMO and we have 7 players in one class. This is a problem that needs to get fixed. i would hate to see a drop off after that class leaves.

I think you should actually see him play more than one game before making a judgement. Don't let premature evaluation happen to you.

You have no data/evidence to make a statement like this- Santo has four years to play and he's played one exhibition game thus far....it's impossible/pointless to project what he's going to do based on one meaningless game against St. Mike's. Santo *may* prove to be irreplaceable.

Each player is different- some make an immediate impact (Voelkel), some may take a year (Bald), some might not play much until senior year (Bergmann)-

ALL help the team at some level.

Re: 2013 America East Recruiting Thread

I think sometimes people are too concerned what position(s) players are capable of playing. I would prefer we get the best five players on the court and back them up with the best three (if they can just play). I think we have a lot of that on this team. There is alot to say about how versatile your team is and making others adjust to you.

He is... he is a GREAT kid, and dad would genuinely like him to go to a school where he is going to get a really good education and make connections in the business/real world for life outside of basketball... Would not be surprised to see him playing at a mid-major (or Ivy).

Per twitter Brimmer and May (MA) PG Adrian Oliveira lists Vermont, Q-Pac, Holy Cross and Northeastern.

Re: 2013 America East Recruiting Thread

Pretty detailed updated on Khalil Duke's recruitment:

http://www.therecruitscoop.com/kahli...is-recruitment

He's probably going to blow up during AAU this summer, but I like our odds given the current company.

Re: 2013 America East Recruiting Thread

I was at the game. He's a pretty good player, but I was more impressed with Olivier Betu from Worcester Academy. He's leaps and bounds ahead of where he was last year when I saw him play. He visited UVM a while back but ended up committing to UC Davis. The way he played tonight, he could play and contribute in the AE right now. The game was a lot closer than it should have been. WA was without Rene Castro (top 100 kid), Canaan Severin (committed to UVA for football), and one other starter I was told.

Worcester Academy has a few players to watch. Matt Cimino, soph I believe from Maine, needs to add muscle, but has one of the best strokes for a big kid (6'8") at that age out to the 3 point line that I've ever seen...and I've been watching NEPSAC basketball for the past 15 years. He's more than likely a kid that's going to end up above our level, but you never can tell.

Another is Tom Rivard. Soph or Junior. Very active around the basket and deceptively athletic. Similar to Cimino he needs to put on weight. But he is a kid I could see in the AE down the road.

Milan Brown, Holy Cross' head coach was in attendance (I imagine to see Oliviera), as was one of his assistants. Also saw someone from Fordham.
