Re: OT: Marqus Blakely 1/6 He owns it!

The Celtics actual needs stretch far beyond whatever impact Marqus Blakely could have- which would be 15th man anyways. Outside of Rondo, they essentially need to replace everyone else.

Blakely makes NBA D League All Star roster.

Another Vermont connection, one of the assistant coaches for the Austin Toros is Alex Lloyd and he will be an assistant for the West Roster. Lloyd is from Burlington and went to Rice then did a PG year at NMH. Lloyd played D3 hoops at Pomona College out in CA.

KDLT News reports...
Quote:
Sioux Falls, S.D. (Feb. 9, 2012) – The Sioux Falls Skyforce announced today that the team has acquired forward Marqus Blakely from the Iowa Energy in exchange for forward Patrick Ewing, Jr. He is expected to be in uniform tomorrow night as the Skyforce hosts the Idaho Stampede at 7 p.m. CT.

Blakely, who was named to the Eastern Conference All-Star Team yesterday, averaged 13.4 points and 5.6 rebounds in 14 games (nine starts) with the Iowa Energy this season after being waived by the Houston Rockets in training camp. He was called up by Houston last season after averaging 15.0 points and 6.3 rebounds in 49 games with the Energy (24) and Bakersfield Jam (25). The 6-5, 220-pound guard averaged 17.3 points 9.3 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 2.4 steals and 1.9 blocks his senior season at the University of Vermont.

Re: OT: Marqus Blakely 1/6 He owns it!

I don't know if this is good or bad for Marqus. He's going from the first place team to the last place team, which isn't good in itself, but if he makes a noticeable improvement in the performance of his new team he might get that call-up.

I'm still hoping....

I think it's a good thing- from what I saw it seemed like Marqus had fallen out of favor with the coach after having a sloppy game he started bringing Marqus off the bench. There's zero reason on that team why anyone would do that (bring him off the bench) and on offense Marqus was getting significantly less touches the last few games.

Will be a fresh start. That being said, Marqus needs to really assert himself on the offensive end and not just hope his teammates look for him (which in this league everyone is looking for themselves) or continue to get points off rebounds and transition, which was what had been happening over the last few games in Iowa. He needs to command the ball and show his offensive game is more diversified, and I think he was doing that at the beginning of this D League season.

Any idea as to what may have transpired between Marqus and his coach ?

I don't think it was anything egregious, all I know is he was replaced in the starting lineup and his minutes had dropped. Watching games the announcers mentioned the coach had said Marqus was obviously highly talented but tended to "lose focus at times" which I think is also probably true.

Either way, there's no reason why Marqus should be coming off the bench for any team in the D League. Marqus can control that though by going out and killing the competition and being in control of his situation.

Re: OT: Marqus Blakely 1/6 He owns it!

It means he didn't defend or box out worth a damn in a couple of games straight. It was rather awful. Not the effort I was used to seeing from Blakely at all.

Marqus, just traded to the Sioux Falls Skyforce, played 21 minutes Friday for his new team against the Idaho Stampede.
http://www.nba.com/dleague/games/201...#nbaGIboxscore

He's at the tail end of the video (on that page), with a dunk.

He went 3-6 FG, 1-2 FT, 5 rebounds, 3 steals, 1 assist, 4 TOs. Fouled out (6 PF).

Re: OT: Marqus Blakely 1/6 He owns it!

Honestly, the biggest area of improvement for Marqus and why he's not on an NBA roster right now is he has no offensive identity.

I've watched enough of the D League now over the past two seasons, and it's three passes (if that) and the shot is going up. Marqus needs to forget about back to basket posting up/that move where he seals and spins and every time he works out he needs to work on face the basket offensive moves only. His teammates aren't going to give him the ball in his comfort spots on the court consistently. When he catches the ball on the wing he needs get in triple threat position, drive or take a jump shot- not look to pass back out.

If he doesn't do this, then he's going to continue to just have to rely on creating his own offense on offensive boards and transition plays off steals- in other words, not diversifying his game.
