Marqus is a legit Small Forward these days. He is comfortable in the D League at the 3.

That said, your point still stands- he's still undersized when many PGs and SGs in the NBA are 6'5''

But with Marqus' wingspan and athleticism, he plays bigger than he is.

Re: OT: Marqus Blakely 1/6 He owns it!

marqus is quite long at 6' 5".
i think if he could shoot his jumper off the dribble, have a better handle in the open floor and be a little quicker defensively, it would mean more than additional height.

These have been the marks against Marqus since day one... while he has made some steps in the right direction, he hasn't made the strides that NBA execs are looking for...

The problem is at the NBA level, you can say that about almost anyone- and they happen to be 6'7''- 6'8'' and not 6'5''.

At least most NBA players at the 3.

Re: OT: Marqus Blakely 1/6 He owns it!

i'm sorry but with marqus standing reach he can reach as high as most SF's in the NBA. standing reach is way more important than height. height only matters in seeing over things not reaching up for rebounds. being shorter means he can get down in a defensive stance lower than most SF's as well.

Marqus had 21pts on 7/13 FG, 12 boards, 3 assists, 3 blocks in another win tonight for Sioux Falls.

My prediction is the Denver Nuggets sign him. Partially because I send them and email every week telling them to!

Marqus was honored on the NBA DL website this week as an outstanding performer.

Re: OT: Marqus Blakely 1/6 He owns it!

From yesterday's Des Moines Register:
Quote:
Iowa Energy: Former Iowa player Blakely scores 18 in Sioux Falls win
Blakely scores 18, gives glare, helps Sioux Falls win
Mark Emmert 3/18/12

Marqus Blakely nailed a 3-pointer right in front of the Iowa Energy bench Sunday, then turned and glared at his former teammates.

It was a not-so-subtle message that the Sioux Falls Skyforce are no longer to be trifled with. And the Energy have had a bit of swagger knocked out of them.

Sioux Falls sent Iowa to its fourth consecutive loss with a 114-101 victory before an announced crowd of 3,895 at Wells Fargo Arena.

“Going into it, it felt a little personal, I guess. I would hope it would feel the same way on the other end. That’s why you compete every night,” said Blakely, who was traded by Iowa for Patrick Ewing Jr. five weeks ago.

“Stuff happens. It’s a business. I’m not going to stop playing and I’m not going to get down on myself because I got traded.”

Blakely delivered a couple of hard fouls early, put down a trio of vehement dunks, and repeatedly shot pointed looks at the Iowa bench. He finished with 18 points.

“I know when I was on Iowa, the Skyforce was one of the teams we’d beat up on. So it’s good to be on the opposing end and get a win,” he said after helping lowly Sioux Falls (13-29) win its third in a row.

That one in particular was a gem. Great call-out.

Re: OT: Marqus Blakely 1/6 He owns it!

are you talking about grammar or the idea that how high your hand reaches is way more important than how tall you are.

i read something about standing reach with big men in the nba. i'm pretty sure no big man with a standing reach shorter than 9 feet has ever led his team to multiple titles or maybe even just 1. all the greats had a standing reach higher than 9 feet. blake griffin is shorter than 9. maybe he will break the rule some day. Amare is as well but those players have superior athleticism to get by with.

If a stat existed for “wingspan to size ratio,” the leader from this Portsmouth class would surely be Vermont’s Marqus Blakely. Measuring a shade under 6-5 without shoes, Blakely possesses a freakish 7-1 wingspan, which when combined with his NCAA dunk-contest winning athleticism, helps explain why he was such an awesome rebounder, shot-blocker and ball-thief in college. For comparison’s sake, Blakely’s arms are just as long or longer than players like Joakim Noah, Al Horford, Drew Gooden and Charlie Villanueva.

Re: OT: Marqus Blakely 1/6 He owns it!

11 fouls in just over 50 minutes of playing time this weekend in their two-game series with Bakersfield. Sounds like he still has plenty of work to put in defensively if he wants to get to the next level.
