Re: Coaching Carousel
Eastern Illinois hires Jay Spoonhour, son of respected coach Charlie Spoonhour. The son has been the coach at Moberly JC for 3 years. Prior to that he was an assistant at five DI schools and, at UNLV, was head coach for a month when his father took a leave of absence.
In an unusual approach, E. Illinois announced the five finalists and invited fans to ask them questions in open forums. The other finalists were Brian Fish (Oregon asst.); Kareem Richardson (Xavier asst.); David Cason (Vandy asst.) and Doug Novsek (Nevada asst.) |

Re: Coaching Carousel
Miami (Ohio) has hired John Cooper of Tennessee St. He led the Tigers to their first 20-win season in 32 years and was the only team to defeat Murray St. in the regular season. They fell to Murray 57-54 in the OVC championship, then lost to Mercer in the CIT tournament.
He's hoping to return Miami to their 1990's success. The 1999 team, led by Wally Szczerbiak, made the Sweet 16. Arizona assistant Jim Whitford, who was the Miami assistant during those years, wasn't interested in returning to Ohio |

Re: Coaching Carousel
Also looks like Jim Ferry of LIU-Brooklyn may jump to Western PA and take the Duquesne job. Somewhat of a surprise (he turned Manhattan down last year) b/c he has a great shot to go back to the tournament next year for the 3rd time in a row. I'd think he would get better offers if he waits one more year, but then again, a bird in the hand.....no guarantees in a one-bid league, so maybe he feels like he needs to strike while the iron is hot!

Personally, I think he just used the Manhattan offer last year to get a raise from LIU. His contract at LIU is probably worth about $250k/year. If he can double that amount in a 5-year guarantee deal at Duquesne, then he likely bolts. I doubt LIU can come close to matching any offer from Duquesne and he'll get more bang for his buck in Pittsburgh over NYC. Long Island is certainly the early favorite to win the NEC again next year, so he can't really be hurt by staying. But there are not may Northeast coaches on the hot seat, so I'm not sure what job he'd be waiting for. What other A-10 or Big East jobs are likely to open up next year? |

Re: Coaching Carousel
When low D1 coaches have opportunities to make 2x-2.5x their current salaries, not sure how they can walk away from that.
I think also the uncertainty when the next A10 job opens up and would Ferry be a candidate has to factor in as well.

Re: Coaching Carousel
What offers did Ferry get last year? the one everyone knows is Manhattan. If all you can get after going to an NCAA tournement is manhattan and then follow it up with another NCAA appearance and only get an offer from Duquense you would have to believe that something that much better isnt going to come calling. If he can turn Duquense around he will have a job ASAP.
He can definently be hurt by staying. He might not win it. It only takes one injury or one freak accident to lose your season. If Ferry wants out he needs to strike while the iron is hot. |

Both these guys have tripled their NEC salaries and its all guaranteed for years. In the last few years the NEC has sent 4 coaches on to much bigger paydays: Milan Brown (MSM --> Holy Cross) Mike Rice (RMU --> Rutgers) Dan Hurley (Wagner --> URI) Jim Ferry (LIU --> Duquesne) |

If Ferry can get Duquesne into the Dance then he'll be looking at another big jump. |
