Re: 2012-2013 AE Predictions

It appears that UNH is out of the BracketBuster as they have no mention of it in their schedule and I know Coach Herrion was not a huge fan of the game. Ashame as a fan I liked seeing someone new coming to Durham.

It appears the AE has gone back to only the top two teams participating... Coaches voted in April... Read into that what you will with both uvm and ua getting the nod...

That's interesting, it makes me wonder if the event has been completely restructured with less teams across the board, or the AE could have sent all teams and just chose two.

Do you know who's call it was, ESPN's or the AE's? Not that it matters a ton, just curious.

Makes sense that UVM and Albany would have been chosen back in April before defections- now I might go UVM/Stony Brook but honestly Albany could still be right there if newcomers can make an impact and the team defends.

Re: 2012-2013 AE Predictions

Part of the allure of the bracket buster is getting a shot at another game on ESPN somewhere. With the CAA contracted to NBC and Vermont's great showing in the NCAA's last season I like their chances for a televised game. Albany would also have had a gret shot at a tv game if Suero stuck around. A top two or three scorer nationally would have been a good draw.

I think SB soured on the Bracket Buster when NU chickened out and didn't want to return the home game they owed SB this year. (Im sorry, Im sorry NUHoopsFan - I was trolling there just to get a rise out of you - I could not resist. No need to reply.)

Yes, we chickened out on a game that was contracted to be played in the 13-14 season. See you on Lawn Guy Land next year.

While we did have a great showing in the NCAA Tournament last season, the TV games are all decided based on current record for the current season and RPI leading up to the deadline for the pairings.

Re: 2012-2013 AE Predictions

The Sports Network's College Basketball Preview - America East Conference

Quote:
OUTLOOK: Only three teams finished with overall records of .500 or above last season in the America East Conference, a trend that could continue this season. Stony Brook (22-10), Vermont (24-12) and Albany (19-15) all look to have enough talent to return to that position, while Boston University (16-16) should also figure into the mix at the top.
...
CONFERENCE CHAMPION: Vermont

PREDICTED ORDER OF FINISH: 1. Vermont, 2. Boston University, 3. Stony Brook, 4. Maine, 5. Albany, 6. New Hampshire, 7. Hartford, 8. UMBC, 9. Binghamton
There's more, including a team-by-team analysis.

(And can we please stipulate that yes, the AE is a lowly conference with a poor RPI and the conference tournament winner will likely be in the PIG, etc. We know. We know.)

Re: 2012-2013 AE Predictions

To give an analysis of Stony Brook without mentioning the incoming freshmen is ludicrous. Im also a bit mystified. When did Marcus Rouse and Anthony Jackson leave school and Marcus Rose and Austin Jackson transfer in? See you all at Rider at 6:00 am in two weeks!

Re: 2012-2013 AE Predictions

I don't see how it's remotely set in stone that the AE will be in the PIG again.

If Hartford/Bing/UMBC get 1 win total OOC then yes, but if they perform better as all 3 teams are improved in some way, then we should avoid it. Each year, the team's at the top all seem to have same type of records- it's the teams at the bottom that dragged down RPI last year. A 9-team conference can afford to have 1 sub-10 win team, not 3.

Yes, true enough, maybe the AE rep will avoid the PIG, maybe not. Depends on what the AE conference is like this year, and how the selection committee (?) feels about the particular team. And it's not exactly a fate worse than death to be in the PIG, either. I just was hoping to avoid the inevitable knee-jerk comments from certain quarters.

Also agree with Salty that it was not necessarily the best-informed preview, but at least it was something..

Agreed...Also, I think there is something be said for going to the tournament two years in a row. If Vermont repeats and is the AE representative, I could see them not being sent to the PIG or getting a 15 seed regardless of RPI cause it seems like the selection committee has reward teams in all conferences for repeat trips as long as that team improves or does close to what they accomplished the year before.

America East

My pick: Vermont
Last season, the Catamounts earned their conference's automatic bid with an ugly win over Stony Brook in the America East title game. Stony Brook connected on just 29 percent of its field goal attempts. Vermont scored 51 points and still won. But Vermont is not the same team that topped Lamar in the First Four in Dayton. The star of that victory, Four McGlynn (18 points), transferred to Towson during the offseason. McGlynn is one of three key departures (Brendan Bald, Matt Glass). So why pick Vermont to win the league? Well, Brian Voelkel, the most outstanding player in the conference tournament, and Luke Apfeld (9.9 points per game, 4.1 rebounds per game) are two of four starters who return for the Catamounts.

Greatest threat: Stony Brook won the regular-season title and botched any hope of an NCAA tourney berth with its lackluster effort in the conference tournament title game. But in conference play, the Seawolves were the most efficient defense in the America East, per Ken Pomeroy's stats. Strong defense is their best chance of recuperating from the loss of leading scorer Bryan Dougher and two other starters.

X factor: Boston University, ineligible for the league's tournament title due to a pending move to the Patriot League next season, will plow forward without Darryl Partin, last season's player of the year in the America East, and Jake O'Brien, who transferred to Temple. But D.J. Irving (11.4 ppg, 5.4 apg) and RecruitingNation top-100 recruit Maurice Watson Jr. (No. 92 in Class of 2012) won't let the Terriers fall far.

Preseason MVP: D.J. Irving, Boston University
