Open offer to all AE teams to start a program, join league. UVM considering.
Pity for CCSU, considering Towson already got into the ACC to fill that last open slot. I would bet on CCSU being near the top of the list for the PAC-12 should it move to 14. Back channels have also informed me that Pace and LIU are vying for the 14th slot so that the PAC-14 can break into the NYC media market. Genius I tell you.

It's amazing that this newest cascade was kicked off by Eastern Mennonite joining the Big 10, isn't it? When they tabbed St. Scholastica as number 13, it was pretty clean. If they had just gone to plan and added Eastern New Mexico as everyone expected, we wouldn't be in this mess.

Oh well now you're just making stuff up. Way to ruin what was serious, well backed college football realignment discussion ;-)

Re: CAA membership

Can someone PM the rumors from yesterday? As a Maine alum, I'm extremely interested in how this is all going to unfold.

Re: CAA membership

Quote:
RICHMOND, Va. -- Colonial Athletic Association commissioner Tom Yeager said there is no question the league is going to add new members for the 2013-14 year, and he hopes to introduce them by the end of the summer.

"I think there are some attractive institutions out there that are interested in the CAA and vice versa," he said.
...
Yeager said the CAA has made no offers and there are no applications pending from potential members.

"Part of the thing we've learned through this process is that we have institutions that obviously have successful and pretty well-funded programs," he said. "I think the people that we're talking to also are successful but they want to make sure that they can maintain their competitive success in the new environment, so they're doing their homework.

"We're talking about a marriage here and purchasing a house. You want to make sure you can afford to live in it. It's a pretty competitive and pretty well-respected neighborhood."

While Yeager wants "quality rather than quantity," he said getting to an even number of schools would be preferable. That way teams, particularly in basketball, won't have byes in the conference schedule.

CAA Football, consisting of schools that play all sports plus schools that are in the conference only for football, also is looking for additions. By 2013, CAA Football will be down to eight members. League members want at least nine so they can play eight conference games.

Re: CAA membership

I'm curious what UNH wants? I feel like they are in a position of some power, but maybe I'm overestimating. I guess they are happy with status quo because they contain their travel costs in AE, but compete at a higher level in the CAA for football.

Re: CAA membership

They are not in the position of any power other than saying, "Give me my northern football teams to ease travel or we are taking our ball with me to the...."

The..... is the problem. AEC seemingly can't get the requisite leadership for football.

So...UNH makes a request, as does Maine, and it seems like Yeager is trying to fulfill it.

Football is almost unique like hockey at the this level. If I were UNH (or even Albany to a degree) why pay all that money to go travel for olympic sports down South if you have a better NCAA participant opportunity (or equal to) in the AE?

Financially silly. So...play all sports in the AE, contain costs...get same NCAA opportunity...and go to the Board for continued CAA football funding.

Best of both worlds.

Completely agree. I think you can almost take it a step further and say why play football with those same southern schools at this point.

Re: CAA membership

If it's SBU who's chosen to join the CAA, I guess Tommy Brenton can forget about ever making an NCAA tournament!

You could ask that question I am sure they do.

The answer is simple though....there is no other option.

If SBU joins the CAA no one will know about it until one month before the start of the new school year. SBU will learn from the BU situation

From the news story above, "Colonial Athletic Association commissioner Tom Yeager said there is no question the league is going to add new members for the 2013-14 year, and he hopes to introduce them by the end of the summer."

The AE presidents may be idiots, but it's going to be tough to keep the news from them for a whole school year
