OT - Nice try getting aound Title 9 Quinnipiac

Quinn tried to say that Cheerleading is a sport in order to drop women's volley ball and still be in compliance with Title 9. A federal court ruled against them today.

I remember when Maryland did this, withstood the negitive publicity, and wound up cutting it, along with six other sports.

Re: OT - Nice try getting aound Title 9 Quinnipiac

IMO, the best (or most damming) part of this story isn't that they tried to count cheerleading as a athletic opportunity for women.

They they cooked the books of all the rosters. They would count women 3x for cross country, indoor, and outdoor track. Then they would add softball players before they deadline, but then drop them after reporting to the NEC/NCAA. They would do the opposite for baseball, adding players after the reporting deadline.

Quote:
There were several issues amongst the team’s lawsuit. The plaintiffs argued that the school forced an appearance of compliance with Title IX by the way it counted its female athletes. It charged that Quinnipiac artificially manipulated its roster sizes.

The school eliminated its men’s track teams but maintained its women’s track teams. It then counted the women who ran on the cross country and the indoor and outdoor track teams three times, even though they were the same athletes in many cases.

Underhill agreed with the plaintiffs, ruling that such female runners should only be counted once.

“Quinnipiac’s practice of requiring women cross-country runners to participate on the indoor and outdoor track teams, and its treatment of the indoor and outdoor track teams as, in essence, an adjunct of the cross-country team, are sufficient to show that some cross-country runners who participate on the indoor and outdoor track teams should not be counted under Title IX,” he wrote.

A great article from 2009 detailing all their Title IX issues.

Ironically, I worked on two expert witness matters before Judge Underhill. The guy looks and sounds like Jim Tressel's twin brother. A total no nonsense down to earth guy. Based on how he ruled in my matters before him, I could picture him reaming out Quinnipiac for their scheming.

This makes me very wary of allowing the Q into AE.

I agree. Why not invite CCSU and/or Monmouth?

Re: OT - Nice try getting aound Title 9 Quinnipiac

I will say though...and this is not meant to "stick up" for the Q, but there are loads of schools that count athletes twice when they do both indoor/outdoor track. And schools often ask athletes to at least try out and end up counting them because they tried out.

Re: OT - Nice try getting aound Title 9 Quinnipiac

i believe q was attempting to skirt title nine with no intention of following the spirit of the rule.
the more i hear about q in a number of areas (including academics) the more i agree with unhfan.
perhaps i'm wrong but i think there are many issues at q below the water's surface.

Re: OT - Nice try getting aound Title 9 Quinnipiac

Should we ban schools from the league if one of their teams had a hazing scandal?

Should we ban schools from the league if their coaches have run ins with the law?

Should we ban a school when the AD and Basketball coach are involved in cover ups?

Let's all not get holier than thou.

What Quinnipiac did was deemed illegal in a court of law. We all know their academics may not be up to par for many current members of the AE, and I'm NOT a QC rumpswab, but let's all not get righteous as ALL of our schools have issues.

Oh yes, my wife is yearning to go to Binghamton and Orono during February vacation. I personally miss the Sheraton Burlington and the Marriott on Wolf Road.

That's the one good thing about the CAA, she always checks the schedule for where NU is playing during Feb vacation (her roommate from NU lives in NC).
