OT: Binghamton's Scott Diamond

Pretty cool seeing Diamond listed number 10 in the AL Cy Young Watch published today on CBSSports.com:

http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/blog/ey...cy-young-watch

He's got 10 wins for a pretty horrible Minnesota squad and an ERA just under 3.00 - all after having started the year in Triple A.

Great story for a great kid.

Re: OT: Binghamton's Scott Diamond

On my fantasy team. Picked him up for the novelty, kept him for the results.

Nice- I sure could use him even though I have guys that "should" be doing better than they are.

You're obviously not a baseball guy.

Diamond was retaliating because opposing pitcher on Texas plunked the Twins' star player (Joe Mauer) in the previous inning. Hamilton (the player Diamond hit, and the best player on the Texas team) was quoted as saying he expected to get hit. That's how the game is played and has been played for decades.

It's only recently that MLB has attempted to step in and deter the practice. The irony is that they tend to punish the player who responds to the initial provocation, while the first guy gets away with starting things in the first place.

Typically, the umps issue a warning to both benches before they start tossing players, and they often wait until each team has gotten one errant throw in before doing so. That way, everyone knows what the consequences will be before the third errant throw occurs and things escalate further.

In this case, the umps didn't issue a warning. They just tossed Diamond, which is why the Twins' manager (Gardenhire) was so ticked off and ultimately got tossed, too. Gardy is as old school as they get, so I'm sure he was already ticked off that Texas had hit Mauer. When Diamond got tossed without a warning for retaliating, he must've gone through the roof. I can only imagine what he told the ump was pretty . . . colorful.

Meanwhile, I guarantee Diamond's stock just went up with his team and even with the Texas team. The players understand how the game is supposed to be played, and they respect a guy who's willing to defend his teammate.

But don't take my word for it. Check out the video and listen to the announcer.

That's about as good as in game analysis gets.

You could have saved the long winded response...I'm well aware of baseball as I coach it but thanks for the description. I'm also smart enough to realize that a 6-game suspension for a pitcher is more like a 1-2 game suspension for a field player.

Obviously you didn't get my sarcasm

Re: OT: Binghamton's Scott Diamond

The only knock on Diamond that I've read associated with this is that his pitch at Hamilton was considered a bit too high -- etiquette apparently is that you should hit a guy in the torso, not in the head. But probably a rookie mistake.

The game certainly has changed quite a bit. I just happened to read an article earlier this week that referenced a game pitched by the Pirates Dock Ellis in 1974. Apparently Ellis was somehow upset that the Cincinnati Reds and decided that he would hit all of them in his first start of the year against them. He hit the first 3 batters of the game, walked the fourth on four pitches (only because the batter was adept at getting out of the way) and threw two pitches at the head of the fifth before being removed by his own manager. No warning, no ejection, no bench-clearing brawl.

Maybe I'm the only one here, but I'm failing to see what the point of this entire post is in response to a link on Diamond getting a suspension for participating in a par for the course, standard operating procedure, retaliatory beaning.

I didn't get the sense that the OP was trying to make Diamond out to be a "bad person"- just posting a newsworthy item on Diamond- so I'm not entirely sure what the above was meant to be exactly.
